Anyone familiar with hunting spikes during 1st or 2nd season?

We stopped going there a few years ago but now we are planning on headed there this year.

Any input on what parts or areas to look at?

Also we are willing to PAY and aTRESPASS fee for private land.

I've hunted Starkey 1st season for years. Used to be a good area to hunt. In the early 90's I killed a lot of spikes 1st season. Not so much now. It's been awhile since I've killed a spike or even seen a spike.

I think weather has a lot to do with the change in elk numbers in the specific area of the unit we hunt. Limber Jim Creek area. The elk haven't really moved down to the lower areas yet during 1st season. I was into elk every day last year but never saw an identifiable bull. The area we hunt is pretty overgrown now. Some may say wolves or cougars. But I haven't seen a lot of evidence that would suggest predators have taken a toll on the elk numbers. But I could be wrong. One year there will be elk everywhere, next year, nothing. Typically those years seem to be warm and dry.

Hunted one year 2nd season spike when we didn't draw our 1st season tags and killed a spike. Saw 6 elk that season. Two branch bulls and 3 cows and the spike.

I'm not sure about trespass fees. We hunt close to the Vey sheep ranch. I believe they sell LOP tags. Im pretty sure you can hunt their property for $$$ but I'm not sure they will just let you roam on your own.
