Musk has cited difficulty with Los Angeles traffic and limitations with the current 2-D transportation network as inspiration for the project. The Boring Company was initially formed in 2016 as a subsidiary of SpaceX, becoming a separate and fully independent company only in 2018. As of December 2018, 90% of the equity is owned by Musk, with 6% held by SpaceX as return for the use of SpaceX resources during the initial startup of the company.
