Pros
  • usually freindly
Cons
  • a lot of times you get ignored
  • family has had extreme issues with the lack of proper gunsmithing
Ok place if you know what you want and have educated yourself. Gunsmithing is sub par to say the least, If you get a rifle professionally sighted you should darn sure be able to at least hit paper. after a few clicks of the dials my family member was hitting perfectly.. they mounted the scope just fine but did not actually zero it at any distance...

I have been here MANY times and have NEVER had a good experience. besides the normal "i wanted to ask questions but was ignored" guncrafters experience everyone has, I've actually gotten to talk to Doug and had a new level of "help". one time i asked if they sold 3.5lb trigger connectors for Glocks. Doug told me that i was an idiot for wanting one because Glocks were perfect right out of the box. I also have a Ruger single action that with heavy loads, the cylinder pin walks out. Doug told me i must be doing something wrong. Well Belt Mountain makes new pins that lock in better to correct this problem for a reason so I must not be doing something wrong. But the final straw for me was when i went in and was greated by Doug, not with a "how are you", or "how can i help you", but with "What can I sell you today?". A little presumptive aren't we Doug? The thing is, there are way too many other places in town to buy a gun that don't treat you like crap to need to go to this place. I wont be going back again.

I was in the market for a CCW and went in to the store several times, I was almost completely ignored every time. The one time I asked about a specific model the guy was like "nope don't have one" then went back to some other pressing business (reading).

Glad I found the other shop, made a nice purchase today.

I've been in Guncrafters a couple 4-5 times. I go there to see what they have in inventory. I would not buy a new gun from them nor would I ever allow them to work on a gun of mine. I just don't need the frustration. I have been willing to put up with the Laurel and Hardy act a couple of times in order to buy reloading supplies they had on hand. Even when it took a good 15 min to ring a simple sale of two boxes of bullets.

Olies on the other hand I have known for nearly 30 years. I think we were all young when I met Olie and his wife. I have always been treated as a customer should even though I rarely buy much. They are good people and while the shop is nearly crowded to the point of being a Horders house that is just the kind of place I love to look around in. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU MIGHT FIND!

I went into gun crafters today to have my rifle checked I believed I had a bullet jacket stuck in the barrel but was not sure. I had a bit of trouble with some ammunition or the rifle but was not sure of the culprit. I had informed the manufacture of the ammunition and was told to take the gun in and have it checked. Upon entering the store it was well organized, stocked and clean. several people were chatting so I proceeded up to the counter with my rifle that is when the fun began the individual behind the counter ask what I needed and I proceeded to tell him that I thought I may have a bullet jacket in the barrel, he shined the light down the barrel and ask me if it was blocked I informed him that I had remove the lead and Teflon tip from the barrel but thought the jacket might still be in there. While describing what had occurred at the time that the jam had occurred I did not follow the exact procedure that the person behind the counter though I should have and I understood that his procedure would have been a better way to handle what I had done. as I tried to get back on course and get the barrel checked the person behind the counter proceeded to belittle me in front of my wife while not even attempting to check the rifle out after about 3 to 4 minutes of this I took my rifle and left the shop. I went to another gun dealer who did not have a gunsmith on the premises’ and ask if they knew of any other gun smiths in the area and Ole's was recommended. I was told a lot of customers come to them looking for a gunsmith or gun dealer because they have no intention of ever going back to Guncrafters of Salem. this was my first visit to Guncrafters of Salem so in a couple of weeks I may go back and see if their attitude towards the customers is the same but at this point I will only be going back one more time if they show the same type of arrogance that they displayed on my last visit. By the way I would highly recommend Ole's to anyone who is looking for a good gunsmith and an friendly environment to do business they looked at my rifle gave it a clean bill of health and while I was talking to the gunsmith the other person behind the counter was nice enough to show my wife several handguns and we are thinking about a purchase from them in the near future.

There is a reason so many people call this place GunCrappers - Doug is a complete bubblegum.

The excellent selection of firearms draws me in time and time again, but if the high prices aren't enough to scare me off, Doug usually does. I usually go in, honestly hoping that he is busy "educating" other customer publicly, just so I don't have to speak with him.

At one point I heard a young man asking him about consignment on a SPAS-12, to which Doug replied that he was in possession of an NFA, full-auto shotgun, and how illegal it was. It took the guy about 15 minutes to convince Doug that it was a semi-auto, legally-owned weapon. During this time, Doug was walking around, in and out of the backroom doing random things while arguing the whole time. After the whole ordeal, Doug basically just said "well I wouldn't be interested in selling something like that anyway".

Another, more personal experience, was when I went in looking for a AR-15 lower parts kit, and a bolt carrier group. Doug's employee tried to sell me on a DPMS parts kit that was twice what Midway (or any other in-store retailer) would sell it for. Then he went to get Doug to talk to me about the bolt carrier group. Doug did his whole "you can't build AR-15's from parts because they blow up" bullbubblegum, as others have mentioned on here. I know what head space is, I know you need to check it, and I know on the AR-15 you rarely have issues. When people generally treat me like this, I let them finish talking, and politely leave... the other problem with Doug is, he won't stop talking about how "wrong" you are for 15 minutes!

I may stop in here when I'm in Salem and bored, but as long as Doug is working here, I will never make a purchase. Higher prices are often worth better customer service but you will not find that here.

I gave them a poor rating. I've never actually bought anything from them but have been in there quite a few asking for help in shipping a firearm and just getting general info. The dumbasses there wouldn't listen to anything I had to say because I was a "kid." A few months ago I was just looking for some 5.45x39 ammo and they had no idea what I was talking about. One guy asked if it was for a sniper rifle? I explained it's for the AK74, at which they said "good luck finding that commie bubblegum." I told them S&W was coming out with an upper in 5.45x39 and they just laughed at me.

I highly doubt I will ever do business with those asshats.
