I have 3 grandchildren now (hard to believe) and one of them will be big game hunting age this year. I'm looking to add a rifle to the arsenal appropriate for youth shooters and one that they would be proud to own when they're my age. I know there are a lot of options out there and many excellent youth calibers but I'm not looking for suggestions on that front. My rationale is probably different than many but I want what I want.
Must have features:
* Bolt action
* Walnut stock
* Blued steel
* 16-20" barrel (unless it is a short action and a prospect for barrel swap)
* .308 Win caliber (unless it is a short action and a prospect for barrel swap)
1st choice - Ruger M77 Mk II with 18-20" barrel
2nd choice - Ruger M77 tang safety with 18-20" barrel
3rd choice - Ruger M77 Mk II with 16" barrel
4th choice - Remington Model 7, Winchester Model 70 variant, or affordably priced Kimber
For the right price, I'm fine with a rifle with a worn finish, as long as there's no pitting on the action.
