Check on the left side and see if it is D & T for a William's receiver sight. Web info says they are.
If so no mods needed - and this is assuming you want to go with William's sights.
Personally I have several and really like them.

RV has a good idea above.
Otherwise the Skinner looks like a good solution.
I would have to have extreme trust in the gunsmith/machinist to D&T those holes.
The good thing is that it's the bolt and not the receiver in case of an error.
I would email Bighorn Armory, they use that same Skinner sight on their custom 1886-based leverguns.
See what they would charge for the D&T work.

Maybe they just need the bolt ?
But yes, I have shipped a complete rifle to a gunsmith in South Dakota recently.
And it came back directly to me via USPS.

Great idea. I've got an email out to Big Horn now. Any idea how difficult removing a bolt is on one of these rifles? I'm a pretty good wrench but lack any rifle wrenching.
I love Cody, Wy. I've rolled through there a few times. Next time I'm going have to take a stroll through there shop

Unfortunately am going to need the mod. Definitely not opposed to the Williams sight except I've read recently that there is an aluminum sight of theirs that should be avoided

I don't have any Winchesters but there should be some Youtube videos on how they come apart.
I'm sure @RVTECH and others on here have taken these apart.

I have never removed a bolt on an 1886 (lots on Mod 94s) and I suspect it is NOT that difficult, however it is my guess they are going to need the receiver as this is where the sight will mount.

Here is a MUCH BETTER OPTION, not only more historically correct, but WAY slicker than adding that horrendous lump of sight to the side of your beautiful Winchester!

Unless you "must" have a Skinner sight, the way to go is to use the stock "Ladder" sight that came on the carbines.
And you don't go messing around with holes/taps on a rifle that is now in the collectable category.

Here is another 'option'. I tried this on my 1899 Winchester and it worked out pretty good.
Its a universal Williams dovetail sight base with a standard William's aperture slider. It puts the aperture a little further away from the eye than what is typical but with a larger diameter aperture it worked out pretty good. Just a thought...

They use the exact same Skinner sight on their 1886-based rifles so it's worth a try.
If nada, then maybe Skinner could recommend a smith.
