It's been well over a year since I've seen any H4198. Wanting some to load FTX for my Marlin 45-70. Anyone have any idea why it is not available anywhere? Also, any recommendations for a stable equivalent that is not temperature sensitive? Not interested in IMR 4198. Thanks in advance.

Emailed Hodgkin yesterday about IMR4064. This was the response: Thank you for contacting us. The ongoing wars are affecting raw material supplies which make it very difficult to have estimates on future availability. This powder is not discontinued and we will continue to produce it as we can.

Good luck with your search.

I believe H4198 is made in Australia. A situation which has compounded supply issues.

I've liked H322 for .45-70, but it is nearly as difficult to find as H4198.

You've nixed IMR4198, but that's what I've got for the next time I load .45-70. It comes pretty dear right now at about $60 a pound. When found.

I would not worry about the small changes in fps that might occur with another powder that is less temp stable. I shot a boat load of critters with ammo using Rl 22 only to find out it is one of the worst in regards to temp stability. I would still be using Rl 22 except it has been of the shelf for several years now. I would try IMR 4198 as it and the 45-70 go together like peas and carrots. I doubt in the usable range of the 45-70 you will notice a difference caused by temp stability. Good luck!

Here you go, I am sure it will sell out fast.

IF you are willing to pay the price. $65.99 per pound plus shipping and hazmat, you would have to really like it. Already out of stock at Hodgdon online.

AA5744 is suppose to be a great powder for it as well. I have a pound to try out once my 4895 dries up. Using a 405gr soft point.
Is AA5744 same as XMP5744?
I've used lots of the XMP behind the 405 Laser-Cast bullets, always gave good results.
I used 25gr. of it, and that's about at the velocity of some of the old BP rounds, you can shoot them and still have an intact shoulder joint. Lol.
3031 works for .45-70, but all the IMR powders are hard to find.
Rl-7 is a great powder for high-power loads.
