OK...I give up trying to identify this part. It looks like it might be a model 12 forend weight? It is solid steel and weighs almost 13oz. Any one know? 20180630_121359.jpg

Is there any machining (threading, etc) on it that might be a clue.
I can see a shoulder cut looks like, on one end in the pic, but that's all I can see.

A fore end weight would replace the cap and have the same threading as the cap.

Can't tell without looking at other angles to see the whole thing but it looks like it might be a shotgun magazine plug - meant to restrict the number of rounds the mag can hold at a time. My Stevens 320 came with one that I removed. But again, not sure.

How bout an end shot, gigity. That screw is weird.
Do you have spectacles? There appears to be some ciphering on that artifact.
Is it close to 12ga?. maybe it's something you beat on since it weighs close to a pound..

aha, the weight might be another clue.. a recoil reducer

The plot thickens
It measures 4 1/2" long with Dia of .9 ". It has a patent number of 2635378 but I can't find the patent with a quick search. The top has a recessed smaller Dia leaving a rim at the very end. I took the screw out and it looked like liquid inside that would not come out. Gosh...I wonder if it is a mercury recoil reducer. The mystery lives on.

That is very cool that you hunted down the patent on this plug. My dad had three of these in his gun accessories pile. He passed last month so it was a mystery until now. Much obliged! If you want one just say the word.

Thanks, but I'm OK on plugs. FWIW, that patent was owned by Remington, and fits pretty well
timewise with the intro of the 870 Wingmaster.

Makes sense...the magazine cap in the patent drawing looks like an 870 cap. My father bought his first new gun (an 870) in 1952. I shot it a few times this past father's day. 66yrs old and it still runs great. Thanks Again 20180617_164523.jpg
