I've been a fan of quarter bores for a while. I have a nice custom bolt gun in .257 Roberts and am looking at building a 6.5 Grendel, maybe a .25-45 Sharps later on. Surfing the web I've seen mention of the .257 Ocelot wildcat but for the life of me I can't find a basic definition of the cartridge. Anybody help a guy out?

Interesting. I never heard of the cartridge. Ocelot is the name of a species of wild cat in South America, so seems fitting.

What is difference between .25 Ocelot and .25-223/.25 sharps ?? . Ocelot is just a necked-up .223 brass to .257, same as the .25x45/.25 sharps . There CANT be that much variation but maybe a slight shoulder angle difference of the ocelot .223 neck-up " IF ' you then need to form-fire for a final cartridge shape .
I been shooting .25-223 for 7 years now, and it a good performer. I cant think of anything easier than a simple neck-up on .223 brass to 25-223/aka sharp. And at least Sharps took the effort to SAAMI spec with some barrel and ammo support .

Thanks, guys, everything I could find already assumed one knew what it was. Kinda sounds like a .25-45 Sharps AI if the case has been blown out a little more and the should angle increased. Doesn't sound like it would be worth the effort for maybe 50 FPS if you can buy .25-45 Sharps/neck up .223.

You got to realistically look at it as ... It's simply just using .223 Brass. and there is only so fast your going to push it for performance . I can't imagine Vel. fps performance differs between the two.
'Both' are the same because the wall your hitting, is the primer pockets . You can only push a necked-up .223 brass be it .25 Sharps or Ocelot so roughly same pressure wall . riding the edge to get performance of a .223 Case and you only get 1 or 2 reloads and the pockets are primer are blown out .

If it's close to the .25-45 then I'd say deer out to 300 yd. and hogs under 200. I think they're both harder-hitting .223/5.56x45 and can get past some states' caliber restrictions. Then any varmints in the 300 yd range. The .25-45 starts losing out to the .223/5.56 after about 200 but it's stronger within that range. I'd like to see it pushed just a little faster, though. Curious to try to .25-45 in a 22" or 24" barrel.

We are in the cartridge of the week era. Like bottle rockets on Independence Day: quick to rise, quick to fall.

I going to do a 3rd barrel in 25-223 . I been running 16' barrels, but I going to do a 20-inch barrel next. I think it still be pretty manageable even with a Can on muzzle.
Keeping short barrel 25-223 @ 16-inch barrel is still pretty respectable . I got no problem popping 87 grn bullets doing 2750 vel. with ( 27.7 grn. A-2230 ) .. So any Velocity gain with using barrel length at 20-inch will just be gravy.
but like I saying. if you seeking performance necking up .223 brass, kiss the brass goodby after the 2nd reload . BUT..new .223 brass is always reasonable priced and always easy to get. So that all I been doing with the .25-223 .

If I had to make an educated guess with going Long, like at least a 24" . if you were to bump down to 75 grain bullet weight, with handloading. I would guess ? , you would be getting near the 3000 Vel.fps area .

Sharps is favoring a 3-land 10-twist on the AR barrels, but I think I seen someone somewhere ? 'cant remember' , offering a 25-sharps reamer choice for a Remage prefit . A short action boltgun would be pretty sweet, and you would not have the COAL restrictions of AR magazine .
