The US is the world's third most populated country. We have so many people that each of our states has the equivalent population of an entire country.

I bet South Dakota wishes it had more in common with Fiji than population size right about now

For a very good reason. You do not want your country's Capitol to be in a state to ensure there is no favoritism, hence a Capitol District named for our first President.
