Magnetic North is moving.
Magnetic north just changed. Here's what that means.

Latest magnetic declination map:
https://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/WMM/data/WMM2015/WMM2015v2_D_MERC.pdf

Declination indicated on my topos from the early 90s are over 5 degrees off.

Thanks! Great info. I've never thought to check and you'd be surprised how far it moved since I started using a compass. In the early 70's our "fudge" declination number was 22. Now it looks like it is 15 and dropping faster than ever.

Yep, it's always moving. But just wait until the poles swap positions, something that happens every 200,000 to 300,000 years. Some scientists believe the drop in the Earth's magnetic field is evidence that that process is underway now.

Just think, we may all be living in the southern hemisphere, without ever moving!
