.45 Super 185 gr JHP
Advertised velocity 1300 fps

Glock 21 ported4.6" barrel - 1111 fps
SIG 227 Carry 3.9" barrel - 1168 fps
SIG Nitron 4.4" barrel - 1188 fps
SIG Tactical 4.9" barrel - 1240 fps
S&W 325 TR 4" barrel - 1170 fps

Recoil was significant but controllable with a proper grip.

The worst recoil was with the 325 revolver. Not surprising now; I noticed that for me, the 325 seemed to recoil the most with ammo I tested in these guns previously. The grips do not cover the metal backstrap. I am going to see if I can fit the wrap around grips from my 329PD onto the 325. If that works I will order a new set of X-Frame grips as the 329PD is a beast for recoil.

The least recoil was with the hybrid ported Glock 21

FYI - .45 ACP +P 185 gr load from Underwood has a claimed velocity of 1200 fps.

Stay tuned for chrono results on the Underwood 255 gr hardcast .45 Super loads.

45 Super is essentially a hot/higher pressure 45 ACP with spec brass?

Joe
Yes - with stronger brass.

I definitely feel the difference in recoil. Not surprising amount of recoil, but enough to notice it is spicy.

If I remember right back when I had my 45 Super... I was in the 1300 FPS range with the 185 grain XTP's and Power Pistol. That was a 6" Springfield V-16 1911 though...

It always impressed me how consistent that gun grouped on paper, I think the bullet was going faster and out of the barrel before I could flinch an mess things up!

The Underwood loads definitely do better with the longer barrels - not a big surprise there though - that is common for most ammo.

255GR. FLAT NOSE HI-TEK COATED HARD CAST HUNTING AMMO

S&W 325 TR 4" barrel - 1072 fps

The 255 gr hardcast ammo in my G21 is what I am most interested in - for woods carry where there may be brown bears. A 13/13+2 mag and one in the spout for 14/16 rds of HC 255 gr at near 1K fps - with controllable recoil (the porting does make a difference, albeit at a loss of 100 fps) is not a bad bear load. The Super loads make up for the velocity loss due to the ported barrel.

I am not inclined to shoot .45 Super in my other guns.

I have plenty of +P 230gr HST for my SIGs which is plenty adequate for humans, and the SIG alloy frames would wear out faster with a steady diet of Super.

The recoil of the 325 TR with Super loads with 255 gr approaches that of my 329PD with .44 mag loads, especially if I am not wearing gloves (I need to get some rubber grips with the backstrap).
