Underlayment thickness

Most flooring of this type is set within a 1/4" to 3/8' of the wall and the base molding stacks on top, unless you're going to install some 3/4" quarter round on top and that will hide the expansion joint space that's required to keep the flooring from buckling.

Wow lots of info here! Not intending to hijack the thread, But this conversation has made me realize that it's time for me to redo my flooring, and I'm unlikely to do it very well myself … Can anyone recommend a good contractor in the Gresham area?

Your house is a typical build with 2x10 joist 16" O.C, (on center - meaning center of joist to center of joist) and 5/8" CDX plywood using 8d nails. Some districts require 3/4" CDX plywood but that is your structural component. Anything on top of that is strictly your choice as long as it doesn't exceed 300 p.s.i. (last I checked several years ago).
