If we're talking gun noobs, take a lesson to not be a noob. If we're talking an experienced person that won't likely get DQ'd, just go to a competition and dip your toes in.
 
I'd say half way between the two. Not complete noobs, but not experts either.
Jump in on a speed steel, uspa or idpa. Watch first if you're concerned about getting DQ'd first time out. First focus on finishing, then take classes or talk to people. Everybody is great at those events.
 
For rifle training and practice, the Practical Rifle comps at Tri County Gun Club are the best way to hone those rifle skills. It's not an easy course. ranges are from 0-300 yards. You'll get your heart rate up and learn how to build a quick shooting position off the rocks, boulders and the barricades they have. I live in Warren and can show you some tips about what to expect if you wanna go shooting out in the forest. I have some target stands and steel targets
