This seems like it should be right in your wheelhouse. Spotted this little doe munching on my wife's grapes this afternoon, so I snuck out to employ my new supersoaker. As I got close enough to get a bead on her, we made eye contact. The look she gave me was not one of alertness, but of despair. I could see she was not well. She was obviously crippled in her hind quarters, and had a huge mass of what I later could see was excrement on her tail. The build up was approaching the size of a football. When she tried to walk, she was putting weight on her right rear leg, but her hooves were "knuckling under". If deer have knuckles, she is walking on them. I spoke to her calmly and backed away to the house. She walked about 10 ft and lay down next to our goose berries, where she could browse on them without standing. It would appear to me that her right rear hip is broken, perhaps from being hit by a car, or tangled up in something? I notified our local dept of fish and wildlife, but have not recieved a response yet. She also appears to be stunted. I'm guessing she's a yearling, but stands no more than about 28" at the shoulder. I know it's the time of year that does are running off last year's fawns, but would be surprised if her mother inflicted these kinds of injuries in the process.
Any idea what might have happened to her, or if she has even a slim chance of survival?
Don't know if my crappy pics will be of any help.
