Thoughts on .357 SIG

357 sig is a great round but it is snappy compared to 9mm. the other down side is that ammo isn't cheap although some agencies are getting rid of ammunition so you can get deals once in a blue moon. This is based on personal experience having carried it for several years.

I changed over the crappy glock sights and it has some talon grip tape on it.(it comes off easy and doesnt leave any permanent markings) it was going to be my back up gun for the full size 357sig but the stubby little grip didn't agree with my tiny bean picking hands. Its been in and out of a holster some but not fired. I will post detailed pics when I put it up, ill probably take it to the Rickreall gun show before posting here.

I bought a SIG P229 Equinox from a co-worker (.40 cal), and almost immediately bought a .357 barrel for it, as a buddy who is a Sky Marshal carries one, and highly recommended it.

I was also motivated by the ancient (but still valid) FBI studies about armed encounter effectiveness of various cartridges, with the .357 Magnum 125gr load being the best for their criteria of success: What cartridge most often results in the perpetrator stop doing whatever it was he was doing that required deadly force?

Sure enjoyed shooting it more than the .40, accuracy tests were better, and when I handloaded, accuracy got even better. Did some mixing and matching with front sight height to synchronize. VERY loud, reminded me of a .30 Carbine Blackhawk.

The novelty wore off when I got offered way too much to turn down. The gun was too big for carry and too expensive to leave in the car. I couldn't imagine any other use.

Following up on the ammo thoughts. I talked to the guy at G9 and they said it's high on the list but the changeover cost for mass production is too high. Makes sense to me. A longish barrel .357 sig with their woodsman anti-bear round (if they made it) would be something in terms of penetrations for bear etc. Even a 6" barrel gun would be easy to carry and have tons of penetration. Just not a big enough market for it.

I like that even during the worst of ammo droughts, 357 Sig can reliably be found on store shelves next to the 40 S&W that almost nobody wants.

Saw this test of interesting round. Liberty civil defense 50 grain. Unusual fragmentation and huge energy on the gel block. Different design than most rounds and I wouldn't use it personally but it's very interesting. The energy on the block looks more like a rifle round.

Many police reports of .357 stopping power being similar to .357 magnum. Lots of reports on dogs going down with 1 shot verses several required for 9mm. Also if you've seen a lot of 9mm police shootings it often takes several 9mm rounds. Here's a one shot .357 sig example. Skip to 5:38 mark. Suggest ignoring the commentator but that's up to you.

The 357 SIG as mentioned repeatedly is snappy with noticeable recoil, on the expensive side and also harder to reload (necked down 40 S&W cartridge w/9mm projectiles).

But it's one of the best barrier penetrating rounds available. Maybe not the best idea in a home or apartment defense scenario but a pretty good idea when in public or vehicles. My 2 cents.
