thats a ambitious project fabbing a gas tube , those things are harder than they look , my AMD 65 i wanted to put a cheese grader on it , they grind the HG flange off on those rifles , not meant to have a HG , i had a spare gas tube but needed to shorten and re flare , im not embarrassed to say at all , that thing kicked my but , bad

guess what i found , a Hanyang 88 , but this one is something different , its a Japanese captured Hanyang 88 , i should have it Friday'ish

I've seen budget AR's around for $350, which compares to $150 back in 1991. I would have been ALL OVER a $150 AR back then. :)

I do miss the $50 Turkish Mausers from around 2000, and 8mm ammo for under a nickel a round. Not much really compares as far as value. That's still only about $90 now, and not much more than the cost of.22 lr ammo.

The other thing to consider, and it's even more subjective, is "personal inflation". For me, even $100 was a lot of money back in '91. I could much easier afford $500 now than I could $100 back then.

I actually only need to move the front ferrule forward to the elbow.

As yes the cost of anything is relative, I kept buying SKS rifles in batches until Obummer. PAX

I know you guys didn't know what hoopehearted (my bud) and i were talking about, but I'm going to build an Albanian full length stocked Paratrooper rifle and call it a T34 Tanker. PAX

SKS stories:
1. Mid 80s; Norinco; $110, first firing, mag dump, cosmoline all over my face.
2. Mid 80s; Albanian, well worn, I never fired it, sold for slightly more than I paid for it.
3. Mid 80s; Gun shop in San Diego had racks of SKSs for around $100. I was showing an interested friend some of the features including the cleaning/tool kit in the butt stock. The next day we went in for him to pick one out and NONE of them had the tool kit; the tool kits were under glass at the counter for $10.
4. Since I already had an SKS my first 80% build AR I made 7.62x39.

You can't really compare them to the AR or AK platform. The AK was a replacement for the SKS and the AR was developed in 1959 when the SKS wasn't in official service. The better comparison would be M1 or any rifle of that era.
Yes, in many ways and SKS is better than an AK. Not an ammo waster. Also, the longer sighting radius helps with better accuracy. The non detach mag was good for uneducated recruits, so they wouldn't lose the mags.

You shouldn't have educated the Gun store people.

I bought a Norinco SKS Model "M" (uses AK mags) at the same time that I bought my Norinco AKM with a thumbhole stock (that I hate). Both were $169 each brand new. I haven't found a reasonably priced stock to replace the thumbhole because of the slant cut on the back of the receiver. I would need to have two pieces of metal welded so the back of the receiver was flat.

They both shoot well, but I prefer the handling of the SKS. They are in the "hunting/sporting" configuration bought during the ban. The SKS took while to sight in, but the AKM was one inch above the bullseye at 100 yards right out of the box. I didn't touch the sights.

I might eventually sell the AKM, but the SKS will stay with me.
