If the oil filter orientation allows, I like to pre-fill the oil filter before I spin it on.
I had a 350 Chev that would clack like hell on start-up if I didn't do that.

I like to use the initial start-up, with no oil in the filter, to listen for possible issues. Crank shaft and lifters being worn and such. Of course an engine with 175-300K is going to go lugga-lugga-lugga 'til the oil fills in the gaps. :D
