As a cinema mega fan, I usually don't miss many Hollywood movies. But for the last, oh..say, 5-10 years, I've been more disappointed than not. Hollywood has gone downhill fast. TV seems to be taking its place, with excellent binge worthy series filling the small screen. It's been said that TV was in its golden age about ten years ago..I'd have to agree.

But I still prefer the cinema..although usually from the comfort of my home. There's too many annoying movie goers in theaters nowadays. The food and popcorn are outrageously priced, cell phones annoy the hell out of me. It's too damn loud, and I usually need to take a piss once or twice. So, home theater is my bag now.

For the past five years I've wasted untold $$ on movies that were hyped beyond belief but gave little back. Dune and Dune 2 come to mind. Talk about milking your wallet..and the story still isn't done. Bland character development. Moody and self absorbed gen-z actors, boring boring. Woke, DEI centered production/casting/story development top the list of reasons why Hollywood is and has been failing.

I had high hopes for Civil War..waited and waited till it hit digital. And..I was disappointed again. I'd rather watch Red Dawn from 1984.

So what a surprise I had the other night when my wife accidentally happened upon "The Last Stop in Yuma County" while perusing rentals on Amazon.

An indie, lower budget film taking place in mainly one location, it centers around a group of strangers who slowly congregate into a small road side diner while waiting for a fuel truck to arrive. It's set in the early seventies..and without any spoilers, everyone has a gun. No wokeness here.

It's a mash of the Coen Brothers (Fargo), Quentin Tarantino and Hitchcock all in one. A surreal, psychological suspense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The character exposition is outstanding, the music a real treat, excellent score and great directing and camera work.

It's by far the best film I've seen since No Country for Old Men and what a breath of fresh, free air.

Thank God.

The TV in my living room is plenty big and I can't stand the theaters anymore.

It seems like if I wait a couple weeks to a month or so it's on a streaming service to rent or buy and I just keep saving up all of those $1.50 credits Amazon gives me when I select that I can wait more then 2 days for something so I don't even pay for the stuff that I can't wait to go to the free section.

I can pause it when I want and watch it in my pj's

I think my brother said it cost him almost $100 to go see a movie in the theater with his 2 kids and one of their friends recently.

I haven't been to a theater in literally a decade. I'm simply a year behind the release of a movie. When I can stream it, I watch it. I've gotten over the "have to see it right now" thing and I'm fine with waiting. I like being able to pause the movie to pee and having my own food in my home theater. Plus if I fall asleep nobody looks at me funny and I can rewind. :)

Last movie I saw in the theater was that God awful mess called The Revenant.
And while I don't remember how much tickets and popcorn were...
I do remember thinking about how much powder and ball I could have bought for the same price.

Cost / pricing is what keeps me from going to the move theater nowadays...
I hate spending that much to see garbage.

Thanks for the heads up on the show...will have to look it up.
Andy

I appreciate Indy62 going to the theater and keeping the industry going because I can't stand theaters either. Too much sticky grungy filth! I have been a half dozen times in the last 20 years and that was just to take my daughter to something she wanted to see.

Indy62, thanks for the recommendations, I will check them out.

This one did look good, added to my watch list. Wife still likes to go to a theater now and then and rarely I will go with her just for her. I too HATE it any more. Christmas I bought her a new TV,70 inch Ultra blah, blah. I thought the extra was hype till I hooked it up. It is almost like you are looking through a window at whats going on. Even dogs went nuts at first. So with that and streaming? I can't see the "going to movie" thing. SOOOOOO nice to just sit in my own recliner, can pause, rewind, get a drink, take a leak, and just ENJOY the damn show.

When you bought that TV you paid for several dozen trips to the movies. May as well get your money's worth out of it.

I remember when I bought my first flatscreen TV. I had a rather expensive tube TV that wasn't terribly old, but after watching a movie at a friend's house on an flatscreen, I was ready to write it off.

Our first was when Plasma first hit. We had a nice (for that time) 32 that worked great for tube TV. Big box store was getting ready to go under and had a sale 3 years same as cash. So went and looked at 50inch and was impressed. Damn thing was several K
It was so heavy they brought it out to the truck with a forklift. Took two people to pick it up when I got home. It was nice though. 15 years later one of out kids was still watching that thing even though it was not supposed to last that long. This latest, greatest was $700 and I can pick it up myself. Things have changed a LOT :s0140:
I was just shocked at how clear the pic actually is. Had never really bothered to pay any attention at the store so thought that it was hype till I saw it. Even the dogs had to get used to it, thinking at first they were looking through a window and people were their in their house :s0140:
As another poster mentioned I HATE the theater due to the damn mess and noise. Even when there was not some moron talking on their phone the floor was sticky and I just felt like I needed a shower when I got home from sitting in those seats

Meh , my wife and I get the tab for lunch up around $80 regularly.

Sadly that is NOT hard to do at all any more. Last day off I took the Wife to a Red Robin. Had not been to one in decades and noticed one at a mall close buy. Simple lunch was $47 before tip
Food was on par as bad as going to McD. Service was non existent. I can't remember the last time I left no tip but this time? It was so bad I left nothing. If we had ordered any drinks that meal could easily have hit the $80 mark. I left wondering how the hell they keep the doors open there.

Yeah I don't know what's worse these past few years..horrible service or jacked up prices.

I noticed they had a LOT of pizza offering but, I left so pissed off I would be hard pressed to give them another chance now. Damn food was so bad and service was as if I was supposed to cook and serve myself. 🤬
Some Most of these places with bad service, I get the feeling the employees are two seconds away from saying F off and quitting..or begging to get complained on to collect unemployment.

The price I have learned to live with as it is what it is. The service is sadly too often lacking here because the staff make like $15 an hour if not more so often don't care. When that expensive food is not any good? Now that is just too much for me. We don't go out much any more and when we do it does not seem to be too much of an ask to at least get waited on and get a good meal for that damn price. Shockingly there is still a TON of damn places to eat around me. Some of them I have to wonder how they keep the doors open. :(
