As a cinema mega fan, I usually don't miss many Hollywood movies. But for the last, oh..say, 5-10 years, I've been more disappointed than not. Hollywood has gone downhill fast. TV seems to be taking its place, with excellent binge worthy series filling the small screen. It's been said that TV was in its golden age about ten years ago..I'd have to agree.
But I still prefer the cinema..although usually from the comfort of my home. There's too many annoying movie goers in theaters nowadays. The food and popcorn are outrageously priced, cell phones annoy the hell out of me. It's too damn loud, and I usually need to take a piss once or twice. So, home theater is my bag now.
For the past five years I've wasted untold $$ on movies that were hyped beyond belief but gave little back. Dune and Dune 2 come to mind. Talk about milking your wallet..and the story still isn't done. Bland character development. Moody and self absorbed gen-z actors, boring boring. Woke, DEI centered production/casting/story development top the list of reasons why Hollywood is and has been failing.
I had high hopes for Civil War..waited and waited till it hit digital. And..I was disappointed again. I'd rather watch Red Dawn from 1984.
So what a surprise I had the other night when my wife accidentally happened upon "The Last Stop in Yuma County" while perusing rentals on Amazon.
An indie, lower budget film taking place in mainly one location, it centers around a group of strangers who slowly congregate into a small road side diner while waiting for a fuel truck to arrive. It's set in the early seventies..and without any spoilers, everyone has a gun. No wokeness here.
It's a mash of the Coen Brothers (Fargo), Quentin Tarantino and Hitchcock all in one. A surreal, psychological suspense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The character exposition is outstanding, the music a real treat, excellent score and great directing and camera work.
It's by far the best film I've seen since No Country for Old Men and what a breath of fresh, free air.
Thank God.
