Yikes! I'm sort of a dinosaur with poor hearing. Phone calls are okay, but a bit painful. Texting? What the heck is texting? My landline doesn't accept texts, and my cell phone is rarely turned on. :s0140:

Seriously, I prefer the private messages through the forum and have done most of my business through that. I have spoken to a couple of people on the phone and can understand some people wanting to talk to me before selling or buying. Back in the wild west days when you could meet in someone's driveway to buy a gun, I was also more comfortable talking to someone on the phone to reduce the chances of being stood up. With the availability of "burner" phones, I'm not sure a text gives me any more comfort than a private message.

Note to @Xmark1 If it was something I really wanted to buy or sell badly, I would probably go along with a request to text rather than have you abort the transaction.
I would like to address your comment to me. I owned several businesses (6) before I retired and the one thing that made me successful is the well know phrase "The customer is always right" (Obviously, with some exceptions).
Currently, I have no need to sell anything badly; I am comfortable financially & emotionally.
When I'm offering a great deal to someone at a great price, I do not want them dictating terms to me in a rude or defiant way. I already put up with enough of that attitude in everyday affairs - called life. And during my sales Carrer, I found it very distasteful to have to deal with rude clients. So, there's that negative vibe that still lingers in my soul.
For me, it's a matter of principle. This country is in a bad way right now because, so few people have principals and the courage of their conviction. I feel it's my civic duty to humble people who are a little too full of themselves, and besides it makes me feel good to be in a place where I no longer have to eat so much BS.
Yes, it's a personal thing.

I can argue both sides of this fence. And some nay sayers will object to my current stand. However, I do have the equal ability to write an essay in support of your postulate if it was necessary.

IMHO, let us remember we are all human. And subject to human foibles and prejudices as such. A lucky man will revel in the glory of what he believes is the "Way to be". Such is the inequity of life for those who have not achieved that mindset by misguided thought and their lack of the ability to engage in critical analysis, excluding those that fall into the defines of the Dunning - Kreuger effect, they are just plain lost and most often annoying - avoid them like they are the plague.

My $.02

P.S. If someone has only a Lindline, they can always PM me in Liew of text.

Bless you Bobbygun. Wife uses a cell phone, so if NEED be, she could text if we're heading somewhere for a meet-up. "Can't text, Won't do biz with" is pretty pathetic.

Appreciate the people that will do a plain old phone conversation! Next best thing to being there Y'know.

I laugh at your comment because I am also married to a "designated texter" when the need arises. :s0114:

Reading this response, plus looking at your sixty-seven only positive feedback count, I'm confident we could do business together one way or another.

"Badly" is relative to me. If you had a Colt Python for $1,000, I would want that "badly". Would I NEED it badly? Of course not. I really never need to sell anything badly. Heck, I rarely sell anything at all these days. I was more active pre-SB941, but even then, had trouble letting go of guns. Those "Guns you regret selling" threads are just too depressing. :D

Technically, I do have a cell phone, but I rarely turn it on. In fact, you can't leave me a voice message on it because I didn't set that feature up. I don't want someone leaving me a message when I might not even turn the thing on for a week or two. I have had occasion to turn it on when meeting up with someone to transact a buy/sell from the forum. I do tell them to text me instead of calling, due to the lack of voice messaging and my poor hearing. I sometimes don't hear it ring. One time I gave a seller my wife's cell phone number because she was going to Salem with me for the meetup for a trade. She has an iphone instead of the cheap Tracfone like me, and is much more adept at it's use. She also has excellent hearing.

I spent most of my career in banking. I could have had a bank-provided cell phone that wouldn't have cost me a dime. It drove a few folks crazy that I didn't have one and was sometimes hard to find. It wasn't a foolproof system however. I remember being on the tee box down at Eagle Point and one of my co-workers/playing partners' cell phones rang. He answered it. Handed it to me and said, "It's for you." :s0140:

I think the suspicion itself isn't unfounded, but I try to be charitable and recognize that some folks communicate differently and/or don't care for the norms of the classified sale and tunnel vision on their best interest. I don't mind so much when the person is technologically illiterate and communicates in a way that I might find "strange," if anything I might find that reassuring that said person isn't so connected to the internet 😂.

Anyway, I think that being guarded is fine and if you get sus'd out by somebody, it's fine to just stop the interactions but equally important to remember there's another human on the other side that might not communicate like you/your people do and that, inherently, even the buyer/seller relationship is built on trust.

(sorry if that's all cheesy/corny, I use classifieds elsewhere a lot and my biggest takeaway was always that people aren't as bad as I thought they'd be once we got on the same page or got IRL and interacted with each other as humans lol)

Your response sounds strangely AI'ish to me....

Anyone else getting interest in purchasing an item from classifieds from very new accounts and then no response? I find it very odd and it seems like a scam or potential robbery setup with how they communicate in the inital message. Am I overthinking this and is anyone else experiencing this? I have got 2 this week. 1 here and 1 on waguns.org
I hope this isn't me, I am still figuring out the format in here and the reply feature vs messaging seller has been tripping me up. Gunbroker, AR15.com, tacswap all have slightly different layouts. Sorry if this was me, thank you sir(s)

Aaa, don't worry about it. You'll get the hang of it. :)

🔥 Great observation! Let's dive into how the prompted response differs from one a real human being would've given:

1) Word Choice🔤:
In the first section, multiple words with lots of syllables are used. Then, in the sections after are words like "sus", "cheesy", and "corny." This doesn't come off natural or "human." 👨‍🔧

2) "Glazing"🍩:
Like most chatbot prompts, the response empathizes with the prompt and attempts to justify their position while encouraging them to be charitable and understanding of others. This is not opinionated enough and seems to only justify whatever prompt was input into the chatbot instead of giving a real and opinionated response😠.
3) Effort 🏋️‍♂️:
When you look at the real people respond to this post, they insert anecdotes, they keep it short and sweet, and/or directly engage with the current conversations going on in the thread. The chatbot, clearly, did not do that here and answered the original prompt, gave no personnel experience and drafted a drawn-out, milquetoast response instead 🥱.

Would you like a different response that takes a more opinionated, less wordy approach or discuss other methods of discerning a real human being who was just bored at work (that's right, I'm getting paid to write this), gave his two cents on how to avoid misunderstanding one another leading people so people don't think that everyone is a fed from an AI chatbot?
