Ruger pcc9 is an awesome take down with a threaded barrel. I added mag pull stock to mine so that the barrel securly snaps to the stock when broken down. I'm imagine there 10/22 take down is just a good. I also have a take down savage 22wmr dlx. It's not as practical when breaking down compare to the ruger pcc9. You really cant mess up when taking down and putting back together the ruger. I can't say the same for the savage. Took me about 1-2 hours to re assemble the savage the first time I broke it down.

Neat!

Washington, where the thread starter lives, has firearms restrictions. Unfortunately.

That is the reason I posted my single-shot concept. Now there are factory produced 9mm or .38/.357 single-shot rifles made in Turkey which are based upon the Beretta folding single barrel design. Those weren't available when I had mine built, and would be very much less expensive than a custom one-off like mine.

I find the tendency towards semi auto PDWs amusing because those I have fired are not accurate enough for small game and are big ammo wasters. The Gun and ammo loadout limits the amount of other kit you can carry.

The solo survivor-evader is better off firing suppressed single rounds and retreating into thick cover. Engaging in Rambo gunfight fantasies by yourself you won't live long enough to shoot'em all. Only in the movies....

I went a different way. Pre-WW2 H&R .44/.410 break open Garden Gun. John Taylor rechambered the .44 smoothbore barrel to 3" .410 and made a 16-1/2" 9mm barrel from a Green Mountain "gunsmith special" blank. 34 inches overall. Weighs only 4 pounds. Disassembles to stow in survival ruck with both barrels.

The 9mm barrel has M1 Carbine rear sight and M14 front sight. Is threaded for can. Better game foraging outfit than a .22 LR. Not a combat gun. I carry a Beretta 92FS and a bunch of mags for that.

I like the idea of a Marlin Trapper. For take down purposes, the rear stock is kept on with one screw. I'd see if you could get a knurled thumbscrew that would fit the threads.

Unlike a 9mm or some of the other pistol calibers, the 357 and the 44 mag get much better ballistics out of a carbine. Expect 200-400 fps better than out of a handgun.

Since a defined practical "purpose" remains unstated, some here have assumed it may be a survival rifle. Others have assumed it would be a (fantasy)"SHTF" gun to be used against other naked apes in the certain-to-happen-any-minute Zombie holocaust.

I'm with @Outpost75 in assuming it has to useful. Now.

...Not in some movie I saw. His offering is bulletproof, practical, but not what I would choose, laboring under my own (perhaps misplaced) assumptions.

I'd choose a Savage 24. (30-30 or .223 over 20 ga.). Effective against Zombies or neighbors trying to steal your water. More importantly, it will put protein in front of you today or tomorrow whether or not you need strength to fight a neighbor.

(It fits in a Clarinet case with ammo and telescopic sight, and will kill on the wing or at 300 yards.)

With M1 Carbine rear sight bottomed out 147 Federal HydraShok subsonic ammo is in at 50 yards. Complete pass-throughs on deer at kitchen garden ranges. With sight set at max elevation 147 ammo is on at 200 yards and 124 grain M882 Ball is on at 250 yards. At 50 feet to 25 yards with sight bottomed take a 6:00 belly hold on Mr. Rabbit. 147 subsonic FMJ flatnose is stone killer on small game and Turkey with minimal meat damage.

I used to have a Savage 24V as you described, but wanted a lighter, more compact package which could exploit cheap and plentiful 9mm ammo which is available just about everywhere and could share ammo with my Beretta 92FS.

Proceeds from selling the 24V just about covered the gunsmithing cost for my survival ruck gun.

You've studied that gun. I like it.

Optimum trajectory and sight set up was easy based on prior experience in firing a fixed stock MP5. Shoot, cut and fire confirmation as you go.

Once base 50 yard zero is solid the rest all falls together. Check sight changes and record elevations on a range card typed onto brown grocery bag paper and varnished to buttstock.

Beretta 92 actually does pretty well at range too. Neighbor is retired Fed SA stays on a 12-inch gong at 100 yards standing with his. Terrorizes a steel F silhouette at 200 firing from a supported prone position. The 147 subsonic ammo actually has greater energy than 124-grain M882 once you get beyond 100 yards. Noticably louder whack on steel at 200!

I'm more of a biological devotee, towards any claims of performance and have humanely dispatched a Coyote at 75 yards with a very accurate Walther PPKS .380. (Federal Hydrashok). This is why I did not sniff one bit at 9mm used for forage. I have limited experience with "gongs".

I carry with me experiences in the wilderness (including Alaska and back-country Montana) when there was no food but what could be shot.

I ate well.

My experience was R, D, T&E for firearms industry and various military and govt organizations as a consultant. More a number cruncher than trigger puller, but did my share of that back when I was active duty. Now retired I devote my efforts to the experimental, biological and culinary.
