Is it possible the owner of a stolen gun, even IF it is reported, could experience some liability if the gun were used in a crime, and traced back to the owner?

Case in point. A guy on another forum posts about how how he had a gun stolen out of the glove box of a vehicle he left out and open overnight recently.

He claims to have reported it but he is very callous about it, seemingly unconcerned and even remarked about how he was, 'Never too fond of it anyway'.

This happened in Tennessee.

Probably depends on the State & wether or not there are storage laws.

Probably aren't any in TN, however don't know.

In WA by what i was told, the way our state laws now. IF gun is reported stolen or missing within 24 hour period of the owner finding it is gone, then you as the owner are not held accountable.

Nor is the owner liable for the miss use of said gun which the owner reported stolen/missing in WA STATE, or the actions of a criminal using your stolen gun, from what I was told by an attorney, and the local sherrifs department. But, That's WA STATE LAW.

Anyone asking about this should simply do an easy search. If that stolen gun ends up used in a crime they best get a lawyer. Remember that school shooting down south decades back where one of the shooters was like 11? He used a torch to cut open his grandfathers gun safe to get the guns. Lawyers still tried to go after him. He only had the case dropped due to the fact that the little psycho had to cut open a safe. If the gun is not "secured" well and ends up at some high profile shoot the law will come after you.

Yes, if it can be proven the gun was stored negligently.

Like how the father of the recent school shooting in Georgia is finding out.
