Spanish Civil War (Granada Documentary)

There is a documentary produced by the British television concern Granada, about the Spanish Civil War. I have seen it a couple times in the past. This evening, whilst playing around on the web, I found it is on Youtube. As I know there are others interested in history, I thought I would pass it along. Cheers.

Thank you! I went to school at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and our building had bullet holes in it from the Civil War. It was sort of chilling to think how that wasn't all that long ago. Very interesting time. Heroes and villians. Communists, anarchists, fascists of every stripe. Bloody murder and long memories.

I will watch this.

The Spanish Civil War actually presented me with my first crisis of political conscience. I am a conservative and have been so since forever. However, I strongly believe in democracy. The Republic had my support because it was the legal government, but I hate and have always hated socialists and communists. I found the Loyalist opposition to communism and socialism to be genuine and compelling. Then on top of it all both sides committed such atrocities that it draws tears.

The Loyalists killing poets and writers, mostly for being gay. Then The republicans being willing to flatten Toledo to take the Alcazar and the Loyalists holding out. Very hard to pick a side for me in a way. Hated the communists, but the fascists were no better.

Today Spain is a beautiful country and liberal and more or less happy, all other things being equal. I am glad this is firmly in their past and maybe a little worried that their past is in our future.
