I would buy a 12 GA Sporting Clays gun w/ a good set of screw in choke tubes. Trap guns are fairly specialized guns that are set up to shot high tight patterns for rising birds, however when starting out a good field type gun will work. At the 16 yard line, where you will be starting out, this will not be much of a handicap. I picked up a like new 12 GA 1976 Remington 870 trap w/ a low comb stock & 30" VR FC bbl for $250 for my 13 year old son; I also picked up a factory 26" VR skeet bbl for it from a forum member for $75. I shoot a 12 GA Remington 11-87 Sporting w/ Briley tubes that I picked up on a discount used gun rack for $450.
