You have to rack the slide to chamber a round. It is SAO (single action only).

Single action only simply means the hammer will not be cocked by pulling the trigger.
You must "cock" the hammer by either racking the slid, or thumbing it back before firing the 1st shot.
After that, it's "cocked" by the action cycling after the 1st shot.
A 1911 is a single action auto.

I used to carry a 1911A1 in the Army... I have a "U.S. Property" marked 1944 Ithaca 1911A1 (that somebody altered into a NM... unfortunately) in the gun safe... they were/are SAO...
