Security 9 feed jams

I occasionally get feed jams, or at least what I assume is a feed jam on my Security 9. All I need to do is pull the slide back and let it go forward to fix it. This is usually with the 110 grain loads I get from the range. The 124 grain loads seem to function fine. I'm trying to determine if a different recoil spring would help. It has the stock 17 lb one in it. Since I only need to rack the slide, that seems to tell me the 110 grain round doesn't cycle the slide fully. And that would mean that a 15 lb spring might help. Is all this the correct logic?

As long as you are getting complete extraction and ejection I would say yes, but not knowing you or your experience you need to make sure that "limp wristing" is not coming into play first. In other words, make sure that the muzzle of the gun is not flipping up which allows the frame to follow the slide, not allowing the slide to cycle completely.

Or, the bullet profile is hanging up on the feed ramp? Are the projectiles hollow point, round nose or flat point? How far is the slide from closing fully when this happens?

That's a good point, hadn't thought of that. Though, I believe, "Limp Wristing" is more common in sub-compact guns. LC-9 for instance.

These are FMJ round nose. The slide is almost fully open when it hangs up. The round isn't moved much if at all out of mag. I don't think the feed ramp is factoring in at all. This all seems to be some interaction, or lack of, between the slide, mag and round.

I can't say for sure. It's hard to pull the gun up and take a close look at the range, they somewhat frown on doing that.

I had a Ruger P85. Great gun, and I loved it, but if you did not get a good purchase and handle it with authority it would occasionally fail to properly cycle rounds.

Many FTF issues can begin and end with mags. Try the same ammo with a new mag or replacement spring after running a mag brush thru it. Its all a process of elimination.

OK. Next time you go shooting, concentrate on keeping the muzzle down allowing your shoulders to take the recoil. As FortunateSon says, you almost need a death grip on the gun which will tighten up your wrists. If it does hang up you can safely, at arms length finger off the trigger, tilt the gun up slightly and to the left and you will see what has happened.

Don't use ammo it doesn't feed with. Probably nose diving and hitting the bottom of the feed ramp, the second slide release is giving it enough oomph to overcome that bite.

I'm not an expert on the issue, never had it in a gun I own. Limp wristing in a couple, yes, but was easy to avoid by paying attention to my grip. Bullet profile is a likely scenario for the issue in some guns. Is the gun new? Lubed properly? Maybe working the crap out of the well lubed slide will get it past a break-in period if it's new. Not uncommon to have guns that smooth out considerably after 100-200-rounds.

They didn't say if the gun was loaded or not but I don't think that mattered. They can't tell from a distance or from the video monitoring if a gun is loaded or not. The best I can do is pull the gun back but keep it pointed down range and lean over to look at it. If I tilt it up to look closer, that's not acceptable.

It is a new gun. I have done a lot of shooting earlier in my life but not much in the last 30 years. I haven't had one of these new fangled 9mm pistols. I've had a 1911 all this time and I had a Sig P220 and a S&W 745 for a while but I was more into revolvers.

Yeah, looking down a barrel is a no no in any situations.
When a pistol malfunctions, you tilt the gun to the left while having positive control with you rright. Tilt left, not point left or right.
Then you horizontally draw the rear of the pistol towards your chest while maintaining positive control and correct discipline. If there is a firing line your muzzle must be past, you need to ensure your body is up close to the bench. Once the rear of the pistol is within 6" from your body, you can easily look at the stoppage.

At no point are you pointing it up, left, right or down. barrel stays in line towards the backstop.

I get it for range ammo, I wasn't sure if they required their gold to be purchased or outside was allowed.


If some of this is repetitive, it's because I post stuff that can be read years later by a new shooter and they can grasp the concepts.

They are range loads. I don't know who does it for them or if they do it. They are cheap by comparison, $28 for 50 100 grain 9mm and $30 for the 124 grain, at least that's what it was the last time I was there a few weeks ago. You can bring your own ammo but you can only shoot FMJ rounds there.
