Picked up this ruger m77 in 257 roberts. Looks like its from 1973, dam this thing is heavy! Can anyone tell me more about this rifle? I was planning on calling ruger but with past experience they dont give you much info. The top of the receiver seems different and its a heavy barrel. Just a common tang safety? Its missing the rear sight so id like to find a original to put back on it. 1000006259.jpg 1000006260.jpg 1000006261.jpg 1000006262.jpg 1000006263.jpg

From:

"In the early 1970s I purchased three Model 77s — a heavy barrel .220 Swift, a light .250 Savage and a .30-'06. The '06 has a "round top" action to accept aftermarket bases and rings rather than the integral receiver bases and Ruger rings. I've read the round top was requested by dealers who wanted to sell aftermarket bases and rings. At any rate, demand was lacking and the round top was soon discontinued."

I think I have owned three with the "round top" and still have one. All I've seen at dealers and in pictures had iron sights. Maybe it was aimed at people who preferred iron sights and a smoother receiver design.

I have a 1982 M77 25-06 - sporter with no iron sights.
One of the most accurate rifles I own.
M77 collectors will know barrel maker history through the production years.

Your barrel looks like sporter weight to me.
Very tall front sight with unusual band.
Rear sight may have been removed for scope clearance.
Finding period correct scopes can be a side hobby.
Vintage scopes show up on Ebay.

Good luck with your new rifle !

Found some other info :

This is the first of the 257 Roberts offered as an uncataloged run of approximately 2500 in 1972.

The rifle is a MKI round bolt in ST with a 24" medium weight barrel. ST means is the round top reciever shaped the same as the Remington 700 action so it uses any base that will work with a Remington 700 and standard Redfield.Burris/Leupold style rings. The STs also come with Ruger factory sights front/rear. Like all Ruger bolt guns in 257 Roberts its on the long (30-06) action length. Barrel length was used on the 25-06, 7mm Mag etc.

Great rifles, not all that common a bit heavy after you pack one for a couple of days.

Wow thanks!

Only 2500 made, maybe I should just keep that one in the safe after I find a site and scope for it. I have a 100th year anniversary ruger in 257 also thats pretty beat up. Ill use that one to hunt with

Heck, if ya aint gonna use the rear sight a couple filler screws will be a lot cheaper!
I have a 94 Winchester that someone filled the holes with lead
What holes? Rear sights are dovetailed on Model 94s! (unless you mean the two side plate holes for a William's receiver sight)

Sorry filled the dove tail in. Todd from koonce customs fixed it all up for me and put a block in the dovetail instead of lead.

Ya I might just to the filler screws if I cant find one soon

Also :

M77 rifles were produced with Douglas barrels from 1968 to roughly the 1973 period when Ruger phased over to Wilson barrels. Wilsons were used until about 1991 when Ruger began hammer forging their own barrels with the MKII models. Douglas Barrels had a fine reputation & Wilson barrels were hit or miss in quality control.

Nice rifle, but I never got why manufacturers made these goofy proprietary scope ring mounts, granted picatinny wasn't as big then vs now.
The gun shown doesn't use Ruger rings. It has a standard base and ring set.
As far as "why" of the Ruger rings? Because they eliminate a base and a set of little screws, locking directly onto the top of the receiver. Less parts. Lower scope mounting possible. Tough as nails mounting system that will go back to near perfect zero if removed and replaced. But they are fairly expensive and some options aren't available...
Picatinny is fine if you aren't tryin to mount the scope low.
