I got the wrong ruger magazine. I was looking for the magazine
for my Ruger Mark I standard pistol What I got was a magazine
for later models of the 22 standard pistol (mark III and above I think)
Here is a picture. The magazine with the chrome bottom is what I
need. THe magazine with the back bottom is what I have.
I'd like to trade with someone or I will sell the black bottom magazine.
I paid $24.99 for it. Will sell for $20. Would rather trade.

Pretty sure you can just swap the button on the new mag to the other side of the mag body so it matches the old chrome mag and then it should work, at least it does on my Standard. Very easy takes like 2 minutes no special tools, check youtube. Plus you get a extra round with the newer mags 10 instead of 9.

Yeah, their not as neat as the old chrome ones IMO, but you will only find those on EBAY and such and they typically go for more than the newer ones if you can find them.

Pictures of the other side? Looks like both mags will work, the black one has the thumb pin on the follower backwards.

Southpaw is right, just unscrew the button on one side and put it on the other. Works fine on my standard and as said above, you have 10 rounds instead of 9.
This is the preferred magazine for Ruger Standard, Mark I and Mark II. I think it's the Mark III and IV that started using the different base plate and won't take this mag.

Thanks, guys.

That helped, but there is still a problem. The "new" black bottom mag
fits in further than the chrome bottom. The base on the black is smaller
then on the chrome. As such, it is very hard to get it to come out.
Hard to work the release button. I noticed that on newer standard
the release button/catch is on the front of the grip instead of on the
back of the grip bottom. Any suggestions on this? (moving the release
the release to the front of the bottom was a good idea! I've had problems
with the button/release catching on the cartridge when inserting the
mag.) By the way, I bought this gun in 1065. :)

Weird, mine fits just the same as the chrome and is the same size length.
Unless Mikeyg is right and you bought the one with the notch for the newer mag release.

Again, thanks for all the help. Moving the slider button to
the other side of the magazine was correct. Easy to do
(But the button does not unscrew. You have to take the
magazine apart to make the switch..)
But....
The "new" magazine jams when you try to take it out. The
release catch on the bottom releases the mag, but it catches
as the mag moves down about 1/8 inch and jams. You have
to use a screw driver to get it to release. Not good. The issue
seems to be that the chrome base mags have a smooth surface
on which the catch slides until the mag clears. The black base
mag has a short base and the catch re-engages aft an 1/8 inch.
The catch actually engages further in than normal thus jamming
the mag. Not possible to get it to release with finger. Must slide
a small screw drive between the catch and the mag just above where
the hook is engaged.
So... Anyone want to trade the black base for a chrome base? I'm
getting desperate and might even throw in a little extra money or a trade
( I have M1, M1a and M14 mags and other items)
Thanks
Tom

Now I get it. You're just dealing with a tight mag release spring and that the newer mags have that extra backing.

Mine was never as tight as yours seems to be, but it was a little rough till i took the mag catch out and did some minor tinkering there to make it work better (there's videos on youtube). They also sell an aftermarket extended mag release that makes that issue go away, Here
Or hopefully someone will trade you for the 9 round mags but they're hard to come by these days. Good luck.

Not a problem. It can be mailed USPS. Not a firearm. Padded envelop would work.
Got a picture?
Cash or trade? I have two of the later mags. Also brass. and misc.

So I just got 2 new ruger mags, exactly the same as you have and had the same problem. I fixed it in 5 minutes and can share what I did but only if you're interested. I don't wanna bug you anymore if you're set on trading them.

Thanks, guys.

At least you had it for the battle of Hastings in 1066!

Hey, no bother. Anything that helps is appreciated.
So, how did you correct the problem with the new\
mags when they are used in the Mark I ?
Thanks,
Tom
First pull the base plate, spring, etc. Then take a medium file to that edge the mag catch is snagging on. You only have to remove a little metal, filing downwards towards the base on a very slight angle to take out the edge and create a slight bevel there.
Then when you're done with that, feel along the backstrap the length of the mag where the mag catch runs against it. If it feels rough, which mine did, use the file to smooth that out, finishing with some fine sandpaper to help the catch run smooth against it.
Put on baseplate without the spring and check to see if you need to take a little bit more off. If it's good then pop the guts back in and your done.
