Stanich's was pretty much in my hood. THE place to go for a burger and beer when I moved here in '83. When My parents came to visit every year it was one of the "MUST go to's". Which brings to mind another Portland iconic eatery. Also one of the MUST eat at places. "Produce Row Cafe" down in the industrial area very near to produce row.

"Stanich's had a very sad ending. Ten years +/- after the old man (danged if I can remember his name now) George Stanich passed, the family was in all kinds of disagreement, as I understand. As far as what I heard, from the wife, who personally knew for years, some of the family, it was pretty ugly. It now reopened, with no relation to the family as far as we know, as "The Mule Bar".

We used to get a sandwich at Produce Row go around the world beer tasting then go down the block to The Euphoria and listen to the bands play. It was not uncommon for a touring artist to show up after their show and sit in with the local talent. Good times.

His name was George Stanich and his wife's name was Gloria. George's son Steve took over the restaurant - I believe after I left the Portland area (after 32 years). I do remember hearing about the family arguments and I believe that Steve got into some serious trouble.

Dear God NO! How, I mean just how? Sorry, you caught me off guard, I hated that place.
What are you? Some kind of germ freak? Nothing wrong with a few friendly hands over raw vegetables. I never got sick in all the years I went there. Besides, it was the only meatless meals I could deal with :).

"George"! Amazing how something like that pops into your head, when you not trying to remember. We'd come in for lunch and George would always be sitting at the end of the bar doing paper work.

Now I remember more. Steve did play a big part in the ending of the place. We always had to eat there when my folks came to town. My old dad was quite friendly and out going. Dad and Steve really hit it off. Steve called my dad a "Wussy" for needing/wanting a knife and fork to eat the "Special" burger! :D And he wore it like a Medal!

HaHaHa !!! I always ate huge burgers with a knife & fork. Still do. I just don't like getting the grease, ketchup, mayo, and all the other juices all over my hands !! Not because, I dislike it, but because it causes the hamburger to slip in my hands and the other fixings (I like lettuce, tomato & ONION on my burgers.) to fall out all over the place, then I have to either pick it all up and stuff it into my mouth OR eat it with a knife and fork. 🔪 Then the next thing I know I have hamburger juices all over me, all over the table, and all over my clothes. I don't mind it all that much but (typically) the person I'm with is embarrassed to TEARS ! Either that or laughing at me so hard they fall off their chair and I have to take them to the hospital !! 😅😂🤣😎

In high-school, in Riverside California, c.1969, the Thrifty Drug store had a lunch counter with those padded swivel stools. My brother and I used to get their strawberry short cake with a great slab of vanilla ice cream: 39¢!
