They just keep coming out of the woodwork. :D

Eve's was actually a big full-menu restaurant in the larger/newer stores. Again, as a latch-key kid, I ate at Eve's often. I remember it fondly.😍

And Newberry's, Woolworth, Kress, even Meier and Frank, they all had pretty great lunch counters.😊

The Barbecue Pit I remember was on So. Commercial and Hanson (?). I'd never been to the downtown location.
Everything you describe is correct. Simple home made food. Used to go there often as a child and young adult. Roast pork sandwich, an order of Spaghetti and pie was my go to. Closed in the mid-eighties as I recall.

North's Chuck Wagon I miss. $2.99 and I could eat both lunch and dinner!
North's Chuck Wagon !!

King's Table.
Shari's - Salem near Sportsman's ... when had service staff and cooks who could cook.
Nopp's Golden Pheasant - Salem
Rock-N-Rogers - South & North Salem
Gotta stop now - I'm getting too hungry for a GREAT Hamburger. Where can I get one now ??

Your country kitchen in lyons makes a good burger so does north 3rd in stayton. Probably the best chicken fried steak I've ever had

Naugles. I don't know if they had a presence in the PNW tho'. :)
YES!!! Oddly enough, the last one I went to was in Chicagoland out by O'Hare in 1993. If you want the authentic Naugles egg burrito nowadays, you can get it. Baker's in SoCal has them.

I don't think it is gone...but I am. There are somethings that I don't make for myself..and they do/did.

This one is gone. Was a great little restaurant with a fantastically flavorful menu and an inviting ambiance.
Basta's Trattoria - NW 21st Ave, Portland

Probably still there..but I am not. Excellent America Burger, but be careful how many of those Blue Frog Ice Teas that you use to wash it down. yikes
Blue Frog - Sanlitun, Beijing

Feeling hungry... There is always the Big Texan - Amarillo.
Here is a live feed of the 72oz. Steak Challenge

Or try a plate-sized Logger Burger (Elk) at the Family Kitchen - Joyce

The 5 Point Cafe - Seattle
Getchu some that Chicken-Fried Steak at 2AM

Frugal's - Oly Pen

And a long list of United States drive-ins...car hops on roller-skates, window trays, root beer floats, and cruisin'!

Rarely eat a meal out anymore…so I have yet to find a favorite in the desert valley.

Dad and I had some "business" to discuss one day. He worked in the Forum Building near-by Lloyd Center. We had lunch at Meier and Frank. 👍
Dad was a child of the depression and was very frugal. Meier and Frank gave a great lunch for the dollar.

Hey Orygun, are we brothers ? :) My dad was depression era child also and when the recession hit in '73 I asked him how he was doing in our recession - he said, "What recession?" And then he started describing the "depression". Wow.

Yup! Mine too! They don't call them "The Greatest Generation" for nothing!
Yup! It was amazing to see how he dealt with difficult times (for us) and how he looked back on absolute poverty with such a realistic, matter of fact viewpoint. BTW. I moved to Portland in May 1970. Saw many, many changes over the 32 years I lived there. It's definitely NOT the same town I lived in when I first moved there. :(

When I was younger, K-Mart had a cafeteria in their stores. It seemed good at the time. In California, maybe up thru the mid 90s there was a club store called FedCo. I think you had to be some form of government employee to be a member. They also had a decent in-store cafe.
