Restaurants you miss

When I first came here in 2000, downtown Portland had some incredible little independent eateries. I never remember the names because I was always trying something new. They were a little pricey but I was dating back in those days. Possibly the food carts took some of that away but since covid that industry never came back. I can't find anyplace that stayed open who kept the same quality. Possibly some places far outside pf Portland has? Example, El Tapitio in Rainier.

I don't think anyone has been able to keep the quality of the food without raising prices so much... but just as important, I don't think anyone was able to retain the skills and good service people post COVID

The Cracker Barrel that closed off hwy217 had a banner saying a Chinese buffet was opening. Now that banner is gone and no signs of activity.

Either more offices, or other retail shops or something else

And yes, restaurant industry is shrinking as more families finding it cheaper to eat at home and keep kids at home.

Even drinking establishments are reducing in number.

That's why many years ago people didn't get sick as much as they do now. Places like that were actually strengthening our immune systems!! I hardly ever get sick. One cold in 5 years! We used to eat at all kind of questionable places!

It has been a long long long time since I have been to a bar in Portland or Salem. I tend to go to the same few places locally, so I sure hope they don't go away. The one I go to the most is Sharky's in Springfield where the food is great, and prices are reasonable. We go there a lot after golfing. Heck, my wife wanted to go there for her birthday dinner last year.

It seems like in Eugene, some of the bars have gone away. Usually they are replaced by another, so the name just changes - but not always. There are still plenty to choose from.

We do a lot of that now but the prices tend to be higher, but worth it. I was really just saying, the quality at stores has gotten so bad. I think they are just getting more mileage out of each cow by utilizing parts generally reserved for dog and cat food. That's my guess.

A place I really wish was still around is Farrells ice cream. Used to be on Weidler by Lloyd center. Never did have the "The Zoo". Great banana splits.
Another great one was Roses drive in on 47th and Fremont. Great cheeseburger basket with a chocolate malt. Man that was good.

Morgan's Country Kitchen in the little town of Glenada, Oregon comes to mind. Closed up some years back.

Rose's Restaurant brings back a memory. Sixth grade field trip to somewhere in Portland. The teacher told us all to bring $5 for lunch. They took us to Rose's. The only thing on the menu under $5 was the shrimp cocktail. An entire sixth grade class had shrimp cocktails for lunch!!
