When I was a kid in second grade (1961-ish), we had to memorize this poem for "Poppy Day". (still can)

In Flanders Fields

BY JOHN MCCRAE

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Almost seems strange now. Well remember standing every morning to say the Pledge. Remember teachers, teaching us to respect the Military and those who had served and never came back. Teaching us respect for Police. Remember not uncommon to leave school to find volunteer's from the place that put bibles in Hotels would be on school grounds passing out free bibles. US flag in every classroom. Strange that for some reason it was common for kids to bring a gun to school if student had access to a vehicle. Guns were for showing off to friends or hunting after school. Somehow no one ever got shot or even threatened. Now we have made " progress" and school shooting have become something that happens so often its no longer a shock. All this "progress" sure looks cool for those who vote for it I guess. :s0092:
