I mean, if you're set on a full size Smith 1911, it sounds like you're gonna be carrying a Smith full size 1911... Probably owb. Are you looking for holster or gun recommendations?

Above the waterline might be better than
Outside the waistband. In certain situations.

For simple, effective, easy on/off (dont have to remove the belt) the Precision Holsters Defender is hard to beat.

A lot will depend on how much you want to spend. Being a lifetime fan of the pistol have tried quite a few. Have long loved the simple belt slide for times I am not trying to keep it hidden. For one you can put on and off the belt I have recently liked the Scorpion Tactical Gear Paddle that have a level II retention. They are quite cheap but so far seem great with adjustable cant to them. Both of these kind don't cover the hammer which seems to bother a lot of shooters. If you need the hammer with leather between it and the pistol for piece of mind Galco makes nice stuff that seems to last a lifetime. I have never been able to wear one out.

I have the Guide's Choice for a 1911 and a Ruger Blackhawk. My son has the Kenai rig for his Glock 20. If you are looking for a chest rig, both of these are a solid choice IMO. I understand the Gunfighters Inc setup allows you to purchase other kydex holsters from them for a different firearm that will utilize the same harness. Pretty cool flexibility.

Neither are inexpensive.

Which model? Thx.
Looks like he is showing you the 5JR Express with Thumb Break. They are nice holsters. One word of caution. Most who carry for a while tend to end up with a box of unused holsters. When the net came along it helped this a lot. When I first discovered Ebay I got rid of a lot of holsters I did not use and had no idea what to do with them. May be wise to look at used first and see if you can find one you "think you like" at a better price. There is a LOT of choices for a pistol like the 1911. Not at all unusual for some to try a few till they settle on one they want to keep.

The pistol its holding makes the holster look FAR nicer :D
I have a real weak spot for 1911's. Any time I walk into a shop I gravitate first to the 1911's they have, the more the better. :s0140:
She's a thing of beauty for sure, but the holster can definitely hold it's own.

Good quality leather has always been something I love. The best part of it is when you have been using some for decades and it still just keeps doing its job. You really start to appreciate it more. I have of late taken to using Kydex a lot and kind of doubt it will hold up as well. Not to mention its just never going to look near as nice as good leather work. Few times I have taken someone new to look and they would hesitate over the price of nice stuff like that. I would tell them they needed to remember that if taken care of the thing could easily last them the rest of their life. So that price is really nothing much given the time it will last.
