For those who have shot both, does one have less recoil than the other? Let's say the rifles were essentially the same design/weight with typical for caliber factory loads. Online research seems to have differing opinions. I found the chuck hawks recoil chart but it doesn't seem to have the 6.5 cm.

How would either compare to a 30-30 for example? That is probably the closest I have personally shot to compare.

Thanks

30-30 is the lightest of the three you mention, but 6.5 CM and 7mm-08 are both no more than medium weight. I consider 6.5 CM and 7mm-08 to be the two best for a light (5.5 lbs + scope) deer rifle. (I slightly prefer the 7mm-08, but whatever.)

Here are the foot-pound calculations shooting all three "typical-ish" loads from a 7.0 lb rifle.

7mm-08: 18.6 ft-lbs (140 grn, 2,850 FPS)
6.5 CM: 15.8 ft-lbs (130 grn, 2,850 FPS)
30-30: 10.9 ft-lbs (150 grn, 2,300 FPS)

Between the two calibers mentioned, the biggest factor in your perceived recoil will be
  1. Weight of the rifle
  2. Length of the barrel
  3. Design of the recoil pad.
Why?
  1. Heavier the rifle, the more energy is "absorbed" in trying to accelerate the dead weight.
  2. The pressure of the propellant gasses will be significantly less in a 24" barrel than a 20" barrel, thus creating much less rear-ward thrust.
  3. A no-brainer. You could see for yourself, remove the recoil pad replace it with a steel plate, Mosin style. Recoil pads are for wimps. :D

Both are pretty close to .243 Winchester if that helps, maybe even 6.5X55 swede on its low side, certainly less then .270 Winchester!

Like others have said, neither kicks that much! 7mm 08 has often been used for youth and ladies for years, and yet it's an effective chambering that serves quite well and is THE deer chambering others wish to be!

The .30-30 has been quite the deerslayer. Probably taken more than anything else. The 7mm-08? Nope.

The 6.5CM? GREAT round for 1000+ bench shooting. Seems the 7mm-08 never quite found its place. A great round for sure, and under appreciated!

Kind of like the 7wsm. Gets no respect. To answer the ops question, both are low/mild recoil rounds. Very manageable.
