Yeah, I was looking at that setup. If they need to pick it up where it is that is going to be a very big crane to make the span from the bank. Do they have rail cranes that can lift a whole engine if they get close enough? If they can get everything else out of the way and roll the crane up that would significantly reduce the span (and hence the size of the crane needed).
Being corp, I would guess they have a crane on trucks that they use for lifting all kinds of things. I've ran a crane before and rerailed stuff and it a huge pita! It's heavy work for younger men than I!

That's how it all started. I applied myself, used my aptitude and moved up, got some education and became (one of) the best in my field. I'm the guy people call when they have a problem they can't solve.
I was going to quote Woody Allen, "Eighty percent of success is showing up" but I'm concerned he may have been talking about going to middle school band concerts and ballet recitals

Some better pics in these articles. Last photo of this one is good

If I were to bet on the cause of the derailment, that broken rail would be my pick. They had a lot of power on that train.
Yeah, it looked like it was really shoved up under that truck. And once the rail is gone there is nothing keeping the rest of it on the rails. I hope we get some good video of the cleanup. I will definitely be checking back in with that channel over the next couple days.

I'm sure Rick Franklin is counting his greenbacks! I hear when he bills it's rounded up to the next million. Most of the outfits like his charge 30k an axle on locomotives. I'd imagine the cost climbs much higher on a trestle. I've ran into a lot of his help and they don't seem so well payed.

Holy hell that is steep. I mean I know they gotta charge to get everyone on site, but that still seems like a lot.

Trains get big expensive really quick. Those five GP's sitting there are worth a bundle by themselves. Railroading is not a poor man's game. The funny thing is the railroads have decided it's cheaper to pay him big bucks than to keep their own equipment and crews around. If a contractor gets hurt or killed it's not their problem. Rumor has it the company I work for sold him two side boom d9's for a dollar a piece when he was starting out.

Could be a switch heater malfunctioning plus lack of maintenance as mentioned a few posts back.
I doubt you'll find any switch heaters on that section of track. I see hand throw switches and no signal masts. Industry spurs are generally poorly maintained and that trestle could well be 100 yrs old.

"PORTLAND & Western" Portland, of course it's undependable, broken, over priced, useless crap! Shoulda' gone with "Coastal" or "Newport" or something else and "Western".
