Welcome to the board and if you don't have one yet I'd suggest your first rifle be a bolt action 22. Inexpensive to purchase and the ammo is inexpensive enough to become proficient. The experience will save you a lot of money when you get your first centerfire.

Since you're new, you might not know about online firearm purchases. I buy 95% of mine online. I usually use Wikiarms.com to search for the best price. Often I get free shipping and most don't charge sales tax. You should look for a home based FFL (my favorite). I've used FFL's like that for years, and got to call some my friend.
