I've never hunted before, nobody in my family has either.

I've found a couple people who hunt, but I would not call them regular enthusiasts.

I joined a gun club, but there's so much to learn.
Gear?
Guns?
Where to go?

Cheap single shot 20ga from Bimart. Get your 2026 hunting license and 2026 upland bird endorsement (if you don't already have your online hunter's safety course done, you will need to do this first). Download OnX Hunt (so you know where BLM and Forest Service lands are)Then go hunt forest grouse in September.

What is it you plan to hunt?
What your intended quarry is will give us a better idea of what kind of advice to give you. Telling you how to stalk elk won't do you much good sittin' in a duck blind!

When you do go hunting...go with an actual hunter.who knows how and what to shoot and what NOT to shoot.

Also, processing game is as different as mammal and fish....experienced 'hunters' know how and will almost always be glad to share their knowledge...and expect you to do the same once qualified...

Hunting is a big part of my life and you will enjoy it, if you stick to it. It's not the best hobby for instant gratification. Don't get too fixated on gear. Focus on learning about the animals and nature. Boots, good glass, and appropriate clothing are the most important thing.

What are you wanting to hunt?

they are like plants and don't feel pain.
I'm sorry, but that is one of the most stupid comments I've ever read on here! They most certainly do feel pain! That's one of the reasons ethical hunters try for clean, one shot kills.
Don't feed the newbies head full of bull snookum.

I am guessing you haven't read much of my engagement.

My advise to new hunters is start with small game. they are much more plentiful. you will get many more opportunities to take game, and the seasons are mostly open all year. The other up sides are the same hunting skills are learned and refined. This is also how most who grew up in a hunting family started out. We learned to stalk with our BB guns. and learned marksmanship shooting rabbits and squirrels with a 22lr. DR

This is really good advice. Small game animals, especially things like rabbits, are built similarly to bigger 4-legged creatures. But, being smaller, are much more approachable when you are learning to reduce it from carcass to meat.

Also, having 100 pounds of deer or 300 pounds of elk meat is a bad thing if you decide you don't like it. A 3lb rabbit may be a good way to start to gain a taste for wild meat, assuming you don't eat much of it now.
