Need new caliber recommendations please

I would choose the 7mm-08 over the 6.5 CM. For elk, I would choose the 270 Win, 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Weatherby Mag over the 7mm-08. The latter has recoil but I tried picking calibers within the parameters and still powerful enough for elk. New calibers I've never shot but hear good things about 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC and 300 PRC, 6.8 Western and 28 Nosler.

Thanks, but I already have a pistol caliber (30SC) carbine that will do 85% of all I need, but I appreciate the suggestion. Looking for something for the other 15% - elk, grizzly/polar bear, great white shark, thin hulled pirate vessels etc

My wife's elk was taken with the 7mm-08. With good bullets it's more than capable of what you desire.

In that same vein a .338 Federal or 338 Marlin Express would be good choices, I'd think.

Hi guys, I'm going on a trip and looking for a new caliber for a rifle, to compliment the handguns, and a carbine in (both in 30SC) that I'll already be carrying.

Here is what I need:
A) ability to take Roosevelt Elk sized critters at less than 200yds in moderate to heavy brush.
B) be relatively inexpensive or less difficult to reload
C) not a military caliber

I prefer semi-automatics in general, but don't mind if I end up with something that I'll find chambered in only a bolt-action. So far the 350 & 400 Legend look interesting

You have narrowed the field somewhat in your OP.

The Legends might be a little on the weak side for elk.
No military chamberings eliminates 30-06 - why ?
The semi auto preference places the Browning BAR in the lead.

Therefore, Browning BAR in :
7mm Rem
300 WinMag
338 WinMag

If you're recoil-sensitive, you'll have to step down in power.
Hint: 30-06 (and 7mm-08) are a nice chamberings for elk.

For a lower cost option the Remington 742 series might fit the bill.
In my experience, not as accurate as the BAR nor as nice in fit and finish.

If it makes you feel better, price compare it to .450 Marlin , or .338 anything.
Then the price won't seem as bad.

450 Bushmaster should fit your bill.

In a semi auto platform I would choose 458 socom. There have already been many good bolt action suggestions. As far as one cartridge performing better in thick brush than another, it is not really a thing other than more compact guns are easier to wield in heavy cover.

Because the US military used that cartridge through both World Wars. It was designed for the military, initially with enough power to kill the horse that the soldier may be on. We civilians just got to reap the rewards.
If the standard is current military cartridge, well, we're about 70 years past that with the 06.

I'm not 100% sure that any do - but when I'm in that position it'll be too late to find out. I'm sailing from Oregon, to French Polynesia (and probably beyond) via Catalina, Hawaii, the Marquesas etc. I've been reading log entries of expats (I am not an expat) being boarded by overzealous, and under informed coast guard units of several sovereign states who were very literal about the military origins of stuff. Since it'll cost me literally nothing to avoid this potential imprisonment in a foreign land I'm going to err on the side of better safe than sorry. I should have left out the part about being partial to semi-automatic rifles as I'm most certainly ending up in either a bolt action, or a single shot - sorry for that confusion. I'll take a 30-06 over about any other cartridge for hunting elk. Or deer. Or moose. It's the cartridge Dad used on his moose.
The 30-06 is a fantastic hunting round, but if any military cartridge is banned, it's on that list.

Maybe certain types, like AP.
There would be a long list of cartridges to ban otherwise.

You aren't wrong, if I survive to return from my trip I'd like to be able to take a Roosevelt Elk with it - maybe even before I leave.

Maybe I missed it, but where are you heading that you can't have ammo that is/was used by a military? Is it down to Mexico?
