I have been working on a Savage 99 that had a very bad manufacturing defect on the inside of the receiver where the lever lifts the bolt into battery. Way too much metal there and the lever wouldnt close like it should. I wasnt as careful as I should have been while grinding it down because my hands have arthritis and I got in a hurry because of it. Well now the lever wont lift the bolt into battery so I need someone that has a welder to put a very small amount of metal there for better shaping so I can bring this rifle back to life.

Anyone close to Salem that can do this? I dont have a lot of money and was trying to help out a friend :(

Post a photo of it and where it needs it. I might be able to help and am in Keizer. I don't want to waste your time if it's beyond my skill level as I am not a professional welder but I can hold my own and got a good setup.

Here is the photo of the area, I just took too much off when my hands started hurting too bad and I got in a hurry. I know I should have stopped and went back at it later.
The circled area just needs some metal put there so I can take it down slowly.

I got a nice mig machine but that looks like a job for someone that can tig with better precision than I can provide. If weld overlaps to the notch area it will be very tuff to fix.

The guy at the welding school says he doesnt have time with all the classes so that was a no.

Getting metal in that notch area is not a problem as nothing is in that area except when the end of the lever goes there. I think I would like a little metal added there for more area for the lever to hit and raise the bolt into place. I have electrical tape so tape off any areas that I dont want metal going if you are up to it...?

OP, can you remove the piece that you need the material built up? I see potential issues grounding somewhere on the firearm other than the piece being welded on. Electricity can do funny things when it has to jump gaps.

No, It is part of the receiver.

I've got a tig machine. Might be a bit further than you want to travel however. About 20 minutes south of Stayton.
I dont mind driving to get this thing fixed. I am helping out a friend and Im the one who should have stopped grinding when my hands hurt so bad they were shaking. I just wanted to get it done so that the bolt would close without the force of a gorilla.

Btw, If this is a shooter, not trying to restore as a collectable, can drill and tap for a setscrew (with loctite). Same idea as some trigger adjustments. Adjust as needed. Can do that here as well.

A tig machine would serve you much better in your case. Way more precise getting the bead where it needs.

A special Thank You to CougarMtn,

I got home and ran the dremel on that area with a fine grinding wheel so it took it a while to get it shaped where it should be. I got it put back together and now it locks up and will fire.

I really appreciate you doing this for me. 👍
