I have one of the Ncstar red dot sights that I picked up for cheap and mounted it on my 10-22. it did a great job, held zero and worked every time. I would trust them ok for a plinker or lower power rifle. they are cheap enough to "try out" and not worry about too much.

I should chime in again; I've got an LER 4x fixed NCStar scope on my M44 and it's kept zero better than the scope mount. Once again; the variable power ones have more problems by way of anecdotal reporting.
