RE : Post #3

I just got my delivery (8-7-24). Each meal is still in individual meal packages (heavy clear plastic). There are a variety of meals. No expiration date was noted on the packages. My 40 meals were repacked into a regular cardboard box for delivery. NOT in the military style cardboard reinforced boxes.

All in all. I still think that was a GOOD DEAL for me.

Aloha, Mark

My cases were accepted by UPS today. Likely a weekish to arrive(?)

Even if it was just a single entree... $2.49 a pop is still a really great deal. I kinda hope they aren't all "reduced sodium" meals, but even if, I would still be happy at that price point.

Food is food. 👍

They look like those repacked civilian "meals" that were popular around the whole Y2K panic. Just single MRE and non military components packed into a low calorie "meal". The downside is that they won't last quite as long as the factory packed military meal packs, but the main entrees will fair just fine.

I think I might even still have some of those late 1990 meals intended for the civilian market. They all came repacked into the standard outer bags, but they were all "beef stew" bags and had printed bits of paper taped to the exteriors indicated what entree was inside.

Side dishes and such were all identical in each and every meal bag. The only variation was the entree.

Perfectly suitable and just a bit of history... :D

Thanks OP. Ill pick sone up. You folks should check out "HDR" rations on Amazon. They has been a killer deal recently. $30 for a case of 10. I have eaten a few, and the kids like them.

Basically include the following:
-2 mystery veggie entries. Usually beans/lentils of some sort

-2 huge cookies of different types

-1 pack of 2 brown sugar pop tarts (no frosting)

-1 big cracker

-1 Peanut butter pack

-1 Strawberry jam pack

-Misc pack with good spoon, salt/pepper, red pepper flakes, napkin, wetnap, and matches.

Meal could go a long ways with some extra crackers, a little hot sauce, and possibly spam/meat addition.

I tried a case of those but didn't care for them at all. Every meal is just a slight variation of the exact same main ingredients that all pretty much taste the same. Or similar enough you feel like you're just eating the same thing over and over.

Beans, rice, barley and lentils in combinations (beans/rice, rice/lentils, 'lentils/beans, etc etc) gets old incredibly fast and there is hardly any variations in the other components meal to meal. To top it off, you get 2ea of 5 meals per case. That's not real conducive for "menu variety" when you're eating the exact same 4 ingredients for every meal, anyway.

You can certainly survive on them but IMO, food storage is only worthwhile if you actually eat them periodically to keep rotating your stockpile. For me at least, after I had eaten through each of the mean items it was really difficult to get motivated to eat the others.

That's just me though. If a person is the type to buy em, store em, then toss them out and replace them... they are the most affordable. $30 is a good deal, but still not tempting to buy them again.

Well. Menu selection was a little skint. I didn't get any of the beef strip or chicken, and the "less desirables" came in groups of 10 each while the "more desirables" came with max of 4, but what do you expect for $2.50 a pop, right(?)

One warning! I had 2 where something had obviously leaked. Turns out it was the skittles bag that was popped, smashed into a single flat clump and had melted out at some point. But what I also found was that the poptart wrapper had also popped open a good inch and a half.

That led me to start opening others and I did find a pretty fair amount of the commercially packaged "snacks" wrappers that had been popped. They've obviously been handled poorly without much care of the meal packs being overly compressed.

Possibly just in transit(?) I can't say I was impressed with the thin cardboard box jammed with 40 meals each that arrived with half the top split open.

To each their own, but I spent some time opening them all and sorted out the compromised stuff. There is such a miss-mash of the clear meal bags I kind of doubt they were packed and sealed under sterile conditions(?)

*Don't get me wrong. It's still a great deal, and I was rather expecting to get what I got. I would buy them again.👍
** I ate one of the open poptarts a couple hours ago. I'll report back if it killed me. :D

I shoulda mentioned yesterday. The skittles have a best by 2019 date and ALL were melted and smashed into clumps. To me that would indicate less than ideal heat exposure. For how long is the question. Suitable to cut and suck for a sugar fix, but a real sticky mess and not too pleasant.

Also... the heaters are about dead. The best one, all 4 bars activated (not all of the heaters did), but it took around 8min to feel any heat at all, and close to 15min to get to peaks ranging between 90-101 among the 4 bars. "Normal", within seconds to a minute they will be steaming and boiling and will heat food up to 140 degrees within 10-15mins. (I found out the hard way... with over 400 emergency storage heaters ending up in the trash... that their shelf life is quite fixed and the food stuffs are often more than edible long after the heaters have given up the ghost)

Oh yeah. The mixed seasoning packs in with the spoon/salt/pepper is toast. More than half black, moist, hard clumped and a bit of a rancid smell... and taste. (THAT wasn't pleasant!)

Jelly is about what you would expect from older stuffs. Taste fine but more brown and some liquid bits. Crackers... they're MRE crackers. IYKYK. :D

The nutshelll: They're mainly fine "now", but about "dead" and not really suitable for long term emergency storage, IMO. I commonly eat MRE's... outdoor activities, hunting, long drives, and sometimes at home when feeling lazy and an MRE over rice sounds a lot better than cracking a can of soup or ramen.

For those purposes, short term storage, they are more than suitable and I'm still very happy with the deal. Worst case... you can't get an entree, a poptart (a couple spots the sugars in the filling where crystalized and hard) and a cracker for $2.50 anywhere!

Huh? Added labor and reduced cost? I've become so skeptical of everything these days, I better just move along.

Badly packaged and candy out of date but still tasty 😂

Will say the chili Mac was pretty good with salt and pepper better than expected but the heaters are definitely dead
