Ruger OEMs (5, 20, and 30) are widely available, so I'd stick with them. The steel (not plastic) 20-round Ruger Mini-14 Pro-Mags ran like a top for me in the Minis. I know, surprising considering the make, but they just worked.

You can get Ruger factory made from Lanbo's Armory for less than $26 ea. For 10 & 20 rnd capacity. Nearly as cheap as the inferior aftermarket brands. And if there is a problem with them, Ruger will replace or fix them.

Are there any aftermarket mags these days that work well for the Mini 14?
Yes BUT, at this point why bother? Back when the Mini was a LOT cheaper than AR's I had a couple and so did several I knew. Ruger had long not been willing to sell OEM to the public so we used after market. Pretty much all of them were VERY hit and miss. Could make the problems work but often took a lot of tinkering and ammo to get there. Now days same some money and frustration, buy OEM. Ammo is too pricey to waste trying to make others work.

Exactly. Back in the '90s a friend and I ordered something like ten USA brand magazines for our Mini-14s. Only a few of them worked. Some wouldn't lock into the rifle, some would jam terribly, one would dump out a couple live rounds for every round fired, and they were all soft steel, total junk. They just cranked them out by the ton before the AWB, and like suckers we bought them.

I had one Ruger OEM 20rnd mag that disappeared out of a friend's truck when we went shooting. OEM 20's and 30's were valuable back then. A few years back I found a couple OEM 20's for cheap at a gun show. They were taped together and I only found out what they were when I cut the tape and cleaned them up. I did have a couple aftermarket 30's that always seemed to work but I don't know what brand they were.

I fully agree about the Ruger OEM mags now. All things considered, they're a great deal compared to what used to be available. Ironically, now that good quality larger magazines are available and affordable, I don't really use them anymore. My interests have shifted more towards older guns, and I just don't blast away like I used to.

Having tried a few different types, I can say the steel 20 round Promag magazines have ran for me. Zero issues. I know, I know. Promag.. but got one at a pawn shop.. ran crazy well, so I picked up two more.. all have worked shockingly great. I can only speak for the 20 rounders.

They have worked so well I tucked my factory Ruger mags away and I only use the promags so I can preserve my factory mags.. it's not that they are better.. I'd just rather use the promags and save the good ones for later.

Buying promags Saves you anywhere from $15-20 per mag.
Just a thought if you are trying to bulk up your magazine numbers. If they didn't run, I would not suggest them. I've ran all three, they all worked. The steel ones, not polymer.

But if you have the money, obviously factory mags are the way to go.. and if you can find them.. the ultra rare straight wall "Original Equipment" 20 round magazines. Those things are awesome looking, but uncommon.

Online, the price difference is less than $6.00 per Magazine. Not a big enough difference for me to take a risk on aftermarket mags, from a company with a less than perfect reputation.

Oh wow, the prices must have shot up. It's been a few years since I got mine.
If the difference is only $6, I'm on the same page just get the factory mags at that point.

I go way back with the Mini's.

And I've discovered thru a lot of experience to stay away from anything other than genuine Ruger factory mags with the Mini 14.

You might get some aftermarket mags to work, sometimes, but it's just not worth the chance.
