My Winnie M70 in 338 Winmag, 1990's vintage, black plastic stock, worked great. Then I saw a ForSale ad by @filsonhand for a M70 Myrtlewood stock. Ooohhh...
Time and money are always in short supply, so that one went stale.
@BanjoGeek posted an ad for a M70, Post '64 stock. This thing was thrashed, and the price reflected it -- varnish coming off in flakes, white areas from who knows what. Bought it, then 18 months of 80% travel ensued. Somewhere along the way, I started using Formbys finish remover. Ugh, that stuff is yucky -- it's like waxing your skis with Cosmoline.
Then, China intervened. Thank you, Covid-19(84).
Lots more Formbys, a whole pack of #000 & #0000 steel wool, sanding through to 400 grit, Old Masters Special Walnut stain. Then, after reading threads on here, decided to go with Tung Oil. Only two coats and I was happy.
I free-floated the barrel and pillar bedded it yesterday, will probably finish with a glass bed this weekend.
