If this is too sensitive of a topic, please close.

Watching the opening of Saving Private Ryan and other battles in the movie reminded me of a question I've often thought sbout. What happens to displaced soldiers when some members of a unit are killed, separated, or dispersed during combat? Where do they go during or after the battle or if locationally lost? How are they accounted for? Are they reassigned to a different unit? Would someone be willing to describe the process to me?

Again, I apologize if too sensitive and please delete.

IIRC, during/after D-Day displaced soldiers were absorbed by other units until they located their original units, whereupon they rejoined their original units.

This was a big reason that many units went towards personal comms and locator beacons on their gear and rigs. Of course this was all very recent... in the 80s and 90s, I think some units started doing personal comms (man to man) as opposed to squad level radio and no individual comms like walkie talkies.
