Just saw this today, loved it. Of course, I had already read the book "One Shot" by Lee Child, which the film is mostly based on.

Tons of great gun porn, a very taut and breathtaking sniper scene, great car chase, overall quite enjoyable.

Didn't catch any major "gun" mistakes, and many details that they got right. At one point, you clearly see Tom Cruise strip the scope off a rifle so he can use the iron sights for a close-up shot.

The downfall of most book based movies... If I have read and especially if I really liked a book I am rarely satisfied with the movie. Sahara, for instance, the vast majority of the characters do not resemble the ones in the book, also they completely removed much of the historical backstories from the book. IIRC Cussler sued the directors/producers for the butchered job of the movie as it will probably keep him from selling the series for consecutive movies. Shooter was better than Sahara, but again they changed the time frame completely and made it based on a sandbox sniper returning instead of a Vietnam sniper roughly based on Hathcock. I believe that some of the best book based movies from this genre were the early Clancy stuff - Red October, etc.

One of my favorite parts of Jack Reacher was watching Robert Duvall play Sergeant Cash. Brought back memories of him in "Second Hand Lions", the old, crusty veteran that knows all the tricks. A funny moment in the film is when you see him on the firing range with Jack Reacher, and he has empty shell casings in his ears for hearing protection. :) Hopefully nobody actually tries that....

Sorry to resurrect, but I didn't want to start a thread to make one comment.

Although the movie was a solid B-, it dropped to a C- because of the scene at the gun range.

Most people would have missed how they slipped it in there - 'all the nuts and crazies that come here' > to the out of the way 300+ yard range. Jerks - made a movie with guns in it, so they had to throw in their anti-gun rhetoric and bs.

I watched it Saturday and caught that as well. It was the only thing in the movie that truly irritated me. I otherwise liked the movie.

Wife and I watched it. I enjoyed it, bit feel similar to Burt regarding the gun range scene. The casting had the blessing of the author who was involved in the movie and frankly I agree with him when he said there are no actors in Hollywood who could play Jack Reacher.

hate it when they slip in political agenda stuff - kinda like the later lethal weapon stuff where they slip in anti gun posters in the police station, even the entire movie where they claim "cop killer" bullets. I have yet to see even proof rounds that would punch through the bucket on a cat like that.

If Hugh Jackman wasn't so tied into Wolverine, he would have made a good Jack Reacher.

Suspending disbelief, I did enjoy the movie for what it was, and agree that Robert Duvall was a good fit.

I actually have used 9mm ball for hearing protection when that was only thing available. Of course that was 20 years ago when I was twenty something....

HA HA HA HA.... we used to use .45ACP before 9mm was fielded. Seems crazy-stupid, but what were the odds of something actually setting those rounds off while on the firing range anyway?

What I was trying to say earlier is the it really sucks to be watching almost any movie now, enjoying it, and them see the do the obligatory anti-gun speech or comment in the movie. Such comment usually falls under the radar unless you are paying close attention.

The "crazies' comment at the gun range made no sense at all, just there to send a message out to the drones. That if you go to a rifle LD range you are crazy and dangerous. Disgusting. I know Cruise is a moron - and very proud of it - but damn.

They make ear plugs like that....

Swsede is usually correct but this time, not so much..

I have seen 50 cal AP round punch through one inch armor plate. The cat bucket is not that hard.

I actually think it wasn't that bad, wasn't the "crazies comment" in the same sentence as cruise said "attracting protesting soccer moms who think you're dangerous while having no problem with the swimming pool in their yard" which to me was seen as a retort to antis...

also there was the Reacher's constant "I don't think a guy who was ready to kill 5 people would charge the meter" which seems to be a nod to the argument that" someone willing to kill won't be afraid of another law"
