I was selling something on craigslist some years ago and the conversations seemed real enough till the guy started talking about a postal money order that was for more than what i was asking. the man fedexed it to me and i made an appointment with him to come to my house. then i called the fbi. they told me that if it was for less than 175,000 dollars that they did not have time. i called state, county, and city police. i had evidence and the appointment. seems like they could have arrested this pos in a few minutes. they were not interested. 2500 bucks was a lot to me then. i went to the post office to talk with the post master. he saw the money order in my hand and told me if i tried to cash it i would be arrested for a felony, the money order was perfect except, no water mark. oh
k now were getting somewhere. nope. then i decided to wait for the man to show up, invite him in, then take everything he had right down to his shorts. wife freaked out so when he stopped by i just told him that i had called the fbi and he left. probably to go bone someone else. why not? law enforcement was overwhelmed with scammers so no deterrant

NWFA is not safe to trade or buy. Because it never was.
Don't get me wrong I have traded a dozen or more here before. ( under and old account I could not recover).
The forum is full of flakes and setups and many more great transactions.
I have had flakes that were businesses and citizens in here.

So NWFA has not changed. Scammers have become more sophisticated and evil on how they do business.
I don't really agree with that characterization. Not that it's 100% safe, but after 100+ transactions I would say I've got considerable experience to draw from, and find it's plenty safe for those who play it safe.

Try selling a car on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace if you wanna see what sketchy actually looks like. Probably 75% of the people who will get into contact with you will be people trying to scam you.

How does paying through PayPal protect you the buyer?
I don't believe it would, as PayPal terms of service does not allow purchase of firearms, firearms parts or firearms accessories.

Going from memory here, so certainly could be mistaken AND it's been a very long while since I've purchased anything from here requiring shipping. (a bunch in person @ FFL tho).

Shopping, banking, etc. have become so easy to do online that scammers recognized it as a low effort and low cost way of attacking people. I do wonder if the relative ease and frequency of scamming via online methods will end up forcing people to stay local with their buying and selling.

As time goes forward, I increasingly look at dealing in the classifieds section of a firearms forum like what would I do if I was dealing with a stranger from Armslist? With Armslist transactions, I do not purchase anything that is not face to face.

Here, the users have feedback, and that is helpful but, as has been mentioned, a user's account can be compromised by hackers.

Unfortunately, there's little protection for an online firearms forum purchase that goes sideways. Paypal, Zelle, Venmo, etc. all ban firearms related transactions. That means if something goes wrong, you are on your own and they are not going to help you.

I did like the face to face transactions back in the day, but even those could be sketchy.

-It's been a few years, but I think one of the members here posted about getting robbed of a Dragunov style rifle that he was trying to sell. If memory serves, this was after the law was changed in Oregon so all firearms transactions were required to go through dealers. Since he was trying to do a private transaction that was illegal under Oregon law he was really screwed.

Also, people have mentioned gunbroker a few times and even that site has its issues. If you buy something and the person does not ship it, there is a relatively low cap on the amount you can recover if you pay them directly with a check or Postal Money Order. I believe there is some sort of escrow service that gunbroker works with but I have no experience with it so I cannot say if it is good or bad.

I always use paypal, if i am buying something on here and its an item that has to be shipped, first thing i ask is if they would take paypal. They offer buyer and seller protection. If they dont take paypal then i typically tell them i have to pass

Most folks who do accept PayPal expect payment as "friends & family" gifting. Without any commenting as towards what is being bought.

Because of PayPals anti-2A policy.

Which then leaves zero recourse…

Thanks for sharing, sorry it happened, maybe we could make this person famous . Get his real name public

Doxxing is against most forum rules, including ours.

Scammers can hide behind real normal everyday innocent peoples identities, as an oversimplified reason in your example as why such rules exist.

It happens. Looks like he hasn't had any feedback since 2001…..

Accounts get hacked. I always ask for a phone number and a photo of something random. Like send me a photo of the item with your user name and the date hand written on an index card next to it. Or send me a photo of the item set inside of your refrigerator.

If they refuse to do so I move on and no longer proceed with the transaction. I've been asked to do the same over at TacSwap.

If it sounds to good to be true….. it normally is. Sorry you got burnt.
I'll have to do this thanks

If it looks to good to be true, it probably is. We are driven by instant gratification and all sanity is thrown out the window because we have our eyes on the prize.
