Retired general contractor.
The seventies and early eighties were big on ceiling heat and the popcorn texture, as it was a fast and cheap way to knock out tract homes back then.
All it takes is one little hole being drilled in the ceiling for a hanging chain lamp and goodby for that rooms heating zone.

Yep. My Father in law did a ton of the work. Retired contractor, specialized in building churches. Went at his own pace and enjoyed himself. Trying to be extra safe and do stuff right we put smoke detectors in every room. Mistake was using wired with battery backups. I replaced thermostats twice thinking the first ones I had were an issue until I realized it was the boxes for the smoke detectors.

About 5 years ago I installed a Mr. Cool 36k on my home. My background includes automotive AC and industrial process AC. It's a good unit, but has a poor SEER rating and isn't great for heating.

We just had a Mitsubishi 36k installed in our shop, it's way better at heating. But, it's far more expensive than Mr. Cool.

I'd stay away from any newer tech like heat storage stuff, in floor heating, etc. Way more things to go wrong, and for most people will require a technician and $$$$ to fix.

Someone mentioned in wall heaters, those are cheap, effective and dead reliable.

Thanks.
I ordered some wall mounted heaters and looks like should be easier to disconnect the ceiling and put an outlet where the thermostat is now. Definitely a cheap solution to get me through the season if needed.

With all the money spent chasing efficiency, I don't think it guarantees lower overall costs. Especially if the newer systems require out of warranty repair.

I have also heard that in 2025 legislation to use significantly more expensive refrigerant will take effect, causing HVAC systems to increase in price about $1500.

Legislators are forcing costs onto consumers to make their resume look progressive
