Reminds me of a long ago experience when young and crazy.

The names have been blanked to protect the innocent.

There were four of us bachelors sharing a big ol' farmhouse S. Oregon.

Three hunted, one didn't.

So we loaned S__ a rifle and trained him up,

And when the season came around went up hiway 140 on the upper

Rogue River to hunt blacktail.

Well, S__ was the only one to score, and he scored a nice one.

He was almighty proud, and wanted to tie the buck over the

Hood of the old F150.

To show it/him off, so to speak.

(Somewhere he'd read that that is what cool hunters did)

So we tied him to the hood instead, put the buck in the bed,

And drove all the way back to Medford that way.

Wow, did we draw attention.

Oh yeah, we stopped at a restaurant along the way, 'cause

We were hungry.

The tricky part was, once home, getting him untied

Because he was sincerely going to kill us all.

Oh man, where have the good old days gone?

1969 in the Rogue Valley was a different place and time, my friend.

I've lived in the Rogue Valley since well before 1969, my friend. You're right. It was a different time and place.

The "upper Rogue" is nowhere near hwy 140. The upper Rogue is up hwy 62 near Becky's Cafe at Union Creek, and then on up hwy 230 to it's beginning before Diamond Lake.

NOW I believe you!

The only part of the Rogue River which follows 140 (as you said) goes past the Table Rocks including the "upper" Table Rock, right down here in the valley. 140 then ends at Blackwell Road which is hwy 99. You weren't two hours up into the Cascade Mountains in 8 feet of snow at 6,000 feet bringing that guy in. You were in Sam's Valley where the trip on the hood would have been at most 30 minutes, at low elevation and very survivable.

You had me worried for a minute.

Yep it's changed. Funny you'd mention it because the thing I miss most is Bob Kennedy's, no kidding. I bought my Ruger M77 .270 there in the early 70's and it's still my best rifle. I bought most of my first guns there. Old, ugly building filled with wonders of used plumbing, guns, tools - just guy "stuff."

The building's gone, Bob died... Browns hardware in Central Point is now a restaurant, Sieberts in Talent is gone... Yep, it's all of the big chains now with a couple of newer locals, Bi Mart, Wal Mart and some good pawn shops. Nothing like Kennedy's though.

Dunham's hardware went out via eminent domain to the new junction of Crater Lake Hwy and 99. I still have my case pocket knife and hunting knife I bought there.
