I reside in the Portland area. Over the Summer I purchased a Mosin-Nagant M44 Carbine. I've yet to fire the rifle (I don't know where to go, for cheap/free!), and I'm here to ask a few questions about cleaning, maintenance, and use (such as the proper method of cleaning when using surplus ammo). I was a complete novice to firearms until the Summer 2010, when a friend took me out to a range, where I fired a .22 Ruger and a Sig 9mm. Since then, I did research into what sort of firearm might be alright as my first.
