I am a human giraffe. I'm 6'4" and my neck is longer than folks who are even taller than I am. I've just started getting into long gun shooting after a long time only using pistols. I've bought an AR and a LPVO on a 1.93" mount and the amount I have to crunch my neck down to get behind the glass is really insane. Since I'm new to the AR world the amount and variety of information I'm finding is pretty overwhelming. Are there any other long necked folks out there who can give some advice about what I should do? I understand that riser blocks are an option, but do those really help? Any advice would be appreciated!

How long a neck are we talkin'?

This?

You can either install taller scope rings, riser blocks, and/or move your optic further forward and extend the length of pull on the stock and "snake" your neck forward thereby lowering your line of sight to the optic.... or find some kind of off-set gizmo you can put on the end of the buttstock that will raise the entire thing up to your noggin where you want it.

Something like this thing...

Here's the link:

Since I'm somewhere between the two, that riser buttstock actually looks like something that could help. Now I just need to find a "pistol brace" version or register my AR as an SBR!

Ha! We seem to have found the guy they designed those A2 carry handle mounts for;

Most of us need to really stretch to use these things, but they may be just the thing for you. You could probably even pick them up used for cheap, since most people who try them out wind up hating them. The only problem is your height-over-bore will be nuts, which will complicate your zero, but that is nothing a good ballistic calculator cannot sort out for you.

I knew I should have gone for a traditional style AR. Damn the modern insistence of flat top rifles!

I think we needs pics.....

I have used riser blocks on AR's. Worked okay. Ended up getting rings that are designed to use with open sights on a conventional hunting rifle. Gave me the right eyeheight on a flattop AR without needing the blocks.

I swear I saw a video of an AR Optic mount that had a rear sight built into it for use with a regular A4 gas block front sight. For the life of me I can't find it or anything like it.

Something to add to your problem; If any sort of precision shooting is required, it really helps (at least for me) if ones cheek can assist with both slight support, and faster reposition alignment of sight picture, as seen on a lot of rifle stock AKA cheek pad. Albeit for a long neck, with a traditional bolt rifle, it may be a challenge, but not impossible, though if you still want it to look good??? And may be rather impossible for an AR style. Attaching a fence post with Red dot may be the answer.

My gun has an 11.85" barrel so there are some limits on how much long distance precision shooting I'll be doing. I have found a cheek riser that I can use with my brace (I assume it will actually ship to me some day) but that will just make me more comfortable looking over the top of my scope!

Bring the stock to your cheek...

No matter how much muscle one has, there is a natural pocket between your your upper pectoral muscle and your deltoid. If you position the lower portion of the butt-stock into that pocket while in a standing or kneeling position, you will probably find that your neck is not bent. Or perhaps, in your case, it's not bent to the extent you described.

Not noticeable in my avatar, but I am also afflicted with a neck.

2.91" seemed outrageous when I was optics shopping but now that reality has cropped up I'm thinking it might be the ticket.
I tried it. I sold it.

If i did it again id go with the Irregular Defense version as Slade is the one who came up with the design and GBRS just knocked it off after they kicked him out of the company.

Loyalty over integrity is their motto and it shows.

That link has flat-top AR carry handles. I have one and it works great for what it does. Solid mount, no wiggle and it is a repeatable mount in case you want to take it off. My only problem with it is it puts the optic ~4 inches over the bore with standard rings, and that is a bit much for me. Now I just keep it for retro style builds and forgo the pic rail adapter. I still find carry handle irons a bit on the tall side, but they are nowhere near as bad as mounting an optic up there.

Hold overs get tricky that's for sure.

Oh I don't think I scrolled down far enough. The price isn't even terrible!

I have decided that the cheapest simplest solution is a leapers .83 riser rail. Only about 17 bucks and I can get one tomorrow before I head to the range on Sunday. Won't look awesome, but I think it will work.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!
