What process? The Permission slip or building the silencer?

Completing the permission slip is about the same level of PITA as buying a car, except for the fingerprints. The NFA website for submissions is a PITA, or was when last I submitted a F1.

It's not as easy to build a can as when the tubes and undrilled baffles were widely available. If you have machining skills and tools, it's a few hours of work. If you can print a can, you know more than I do about that. Anyone can slap together an improvised rimfire can from hardware store parts, and it'll work, but your friends probably won't think it is cool.

Actual physical process is dependent on what you have and abilities.
I have plans for Jan 1 to apply for three NFA items in form 1 status.

Process is simple. Recommend doing electronic fingerprints somewhere first. Will make it easier in future submissions.

This! Pre Dec 2021 there were lots of parts suppliers, some selling as 'solvent traps' some just selling and then the ATF decided that parts = suppressor and any part would need it's own tax stamp but you couldn't buy them with a Form 1 anyway because they were already suppressors in their eyes so you would need a form 4 for each part you purchased
Utter madness
But in the last few weeks there have been more and more 'solvent trap' parts popping up on the Chinesium market and even Ebay. I also know some folks that supplied domestic parts back in the day and they have (off the record) indicated will be open for business again in January

I form 1'd a few SBRs, it was easy enough. The biggest pain is finding out all the LEO notifications, but I think they are dropping all those requirements so 🤷‍♂️

You can do a form 1 through silencer shop and they fill everything out for you and do all the notifications once you provide the details. I found the service worth the cost because one of my form 1s got flagged for a silly reason; the importer changed and the ATF did not have the updated records in their system yet and wanted it filed under the wrong company. I was not about to have a non-existent firearm on record so I kicked it back and silencer shop sorted the whole thing out for me. But it is easy enough to do yourself and save some cash, you just have to deal with any ATF shenanigans yourself. Done both, both work fine.
